Making sure I have my facts correct, before buying.

So first post on this forum, so be nice. Lol.

Anyway, I have been looking at Rolex watches for a long time, finally in a position to buy one. I have done a bunch off research and have it narrowed down to a Explorer 2 40mm with the 16570 movement, black face preferred. So where you guys come in, is checking my reasoning for holes.

First of all, the 40mm for the size. I have tried the 42mm and while it fits my wrist it just seems too big, so the 40mm is the one.

Looks like I will pay between $5,500 and $7,000 depending on serial number and year of watch and condition.

Secondly, looks like these watches are only available on the secondary market not at ADs at this point, so I will have to buy used or previously owned, if you will. Correct?

Also a watch with a 16570 movement can be used as a GMT watch as the third hand isn’t tied to the hour hand, like in previous models, is my understanding. As a professional pilot I use the GMT function on my Tag all the time as I don’t want to do the math sometimes, when bouncing around time zones.

Someone on YouTube said something about the bracelet being hallow or cheap feeling on the Explorer 2. Now I took this with a grain of salt, but thought I would ask.

That is it for now. If I know these forums, I will get a boat load of info. Sorry if the grammar or spelling is bad, typing on an iPad.

Thanks in advance.

First off - great choice, the Explorer 2 is a fantastic watch...and has been getting a lot of love on the forum recently.
A couple of updates to your info:
The 40 mm Exp 2 is reference number 16570, the movement is actually 3185 (or 3186 right at the end of the run).
You are correct that the reference is discontinued and you should be looking at the used market. This reference was replaced by the 42 mm 216570 in 2011.
The 4th hand can be set independently so is perfect for tracking a second time zone. The 3185 movement is the same as was used in the GMT Master 2.

Your price range is reasonable; you should be able to find an excellent example with that. Good luck with your hunt!

16750, It’s a model reference number not a movement number

Don’t get to Tokyo on my plane. Mainly US and Hawaii, looking at going skiing in Japan soon so that may be an option.

Yes, sorry. Was typing while drinking and can’t figure out how to edit post. Consider me chastised.

The old style bracelets, while seemingly cheap and flimsy by current standards, served their purpose for more than sixty years.

Don't let anyone fool you. They are lightweight, comfortable, and as durable as their longevity would suggest.
