If you are using Microsoft Windows and suspect a file called SAM is a virus or a trojan or a key logger, DO NOT DELETE IT!!!

Unfortunately, I did delete it and later realised that this is the Security Account Manager (SAM).

As a result I toasted my computer OS and it is now at the repair shop

So not much from me until it is repaired.

I'm not sure about my data, but I think I will be able to get it off.

I might buy a bigger HD they have a Western Digital 320gig for $150 and it sounds like a sweet deal, so I might just get that and try to use my original HD as a slave drive to take all my data from to restore.

i don't get every technical detail, but i understand words like 'toasted'.....

Mate, have a proper backup regime and you won't have this problem. You don't need fancy stuff, just plain old Microsoft supplied ntbackup and backup the whole shebang into your external USB drive periodically. In addition, get this freeware called Ultimate Boot CD for Windows - It's the most handy utility for Windows.

If you get a bigger HD that is a good thing! Hope you can recover all the data you need!

As long as he only removed SAM file, the data's still there. You only need to mount the hard disk onto another working computer and the files are visible. The only issue will be if he setup exotic access rights mechanism on his files, they will be tricky to reconstruct.

I have made my hard disk a portable external hard disk for the time being and will try to restore the XP system.
