Watches will get bigger due to the smart watch trend (people want bigger displays on their smart watch). Also, people tend to grow taller (evolution) / get bigger (fast food, increase of overall wealth, etc.) = the watches will "adapt"

Their downsizing was more about proportions than actual size constriciton.
I don't think it's so much an issue of watches getting larger (in this case Rolex), but the popularity of XXL watches dwindling. With the exception of the DSSD, nothing Rolex makes is very large.

I just got a PP 3923 at 30.5mm. Love this watch. The few that come online for sale sell immediately it seems. Functionality as opposed to a "statement."

Watch size preference is all subjective but I hear over 40mm is fading fast in current sales across all lines.

Ladies watches will be 36-39mm as a norm, and many 38-39mm considered gender neutral.

Rolex discontinued the Pepsi and coke gmt in 2006 because they didn’t sell. They were dogs. AD’s could not give them away. Look at things now. I would “ never” say never when it comes to the watch buying game.

Case in point (pun intended), for the list I showed, they're all larger than Rolex's traditional sized watches. Even the 40mm traditional tool watches wear large. The list sizes are 42, 43, 44, 40 (was 34), 39 (was 36), and 44mm; DJ41 and DD40 as well are both larger than they were at 36mm. Oversized XXL watches are here to stay especially as people are larger than they used to be. They may not be as popular as they were when they were first introduced but the impact has been permanent to Rolex and the world.
