I have unplugged my winder
Good Morning Gents,
After some amount of research and hearing from a few here I have asked I have decided to unplug my Heiden winder and try not using it. As I said I have done some research and it seems winders get mixed reviews on there use but from what I can gather for guys like me that don’t have any time pieces that have a complicated date calendar day function it’s best that I let mine run down and just set it when it’s selected for rotation. I currently have my DJII and it does have the date but is very easy to set then I have my Tudor BB that has no date so that’s even easier and lastly I have a Citizens Eco Drive that requires nothing so it was pointed out thru the searching I’ve done why cause unnecessary wear in these running when I won’t be wearing one for maybe two weeks at a time as my current plan is to switch every Sunday. I will keep them in my winder for storage but will leave unplugged just in case but I’m thinking part of the mystique and lure to these mechanical pieces should include winding and setting as I can still remember my dad winding and setting his watch many, many years ago. I on the other hand am very late coming into the automatic game as I am a pretty load guy but that’s ok as I’m going to enjoy the time I have with them https://photos.app.goo.gl/9kZdeHK8aQZPXCw58

I only use my winder to get the pieces I have not worn in a couple months some exercise. I put them on for a week and then take them off.

Good post. Yes, you are right about the ritual of winding and date setting as I seem to get a perverse pleasure out of it. Haha

I have unplugged my winder
It’s a personal choice. A well lubed movement won’t perish from daily use, so life on a winder for a week at a time isn’t a death knell.
But I agree with your assessment that those watches require little effort to set and wind once a week as you strap one on. Now if you had a perpetual calendar or moonphase complication (that you wanted to be accurate) then you’d likely want to keep them running - and the winder becomes an asset. I may eventually get a more complicated piece like stated but for the time being I’m going to try this as it only takes a minute or so to set the date and time and wind and it keeps the wear and tear off the winder motor and speaking of winding say I pick the watch I’m going to wear for the week and initially wind it, my normal method has been on my DJII is to wind until it starts to slip and I can feel the clicks which is normally about 40 clicks but my Tudor BB I cannot feel the clicks so is 40 not enough turns on the BB since it has the 70 hr reserve of the 40 my DJ has and is winding them fully a good thing as I don’t want to over crank the main spring

I stopped using my winder too, though I’m not bothered about wear on the rotor or any other part of the movement - in fact I think both sides of the winder/no winder debate are guilty of introducing a large amount of hyperbole to the chat regarding the possible risks.
Rather, my winder won’t fit in my safe and I decided that leaving one or two items worth several grand each just sitting on my bedside table whilst the house is unoccupied on weekdays isn’t a fantastic idea.

Actually I never really thought about the $$$$ investment so maybe I need to get a small case to keep them in and store in our safe
