Online grocery and meal in a box

Who uses them and what service do you use?

We use Amazon fresh but still go to the local grocery stores such as Trader Joe's because Amazon doesn't have it all. Still quite convenient. I know there is shipped and others.

We sort of fell out of the blue apron meal prep thing. I can buy food at local places prepared for cheaper or the same cost. However I dont mind making the recipies I just dont have time except for the weekend nights right now.

We have used it Eliot. The meals down to even an onion showed up at the house in a box with ice. It was fine. Too much food if anything for us. We have stopped the service for now. The meals were uncooked, just all the ingredients down to small packs of spices.

We’ve done like 4 different kinds. Blue apron was the worst tonme. Hello fresh the best.

You can easily remake the meals yourself as well. Recipe cards are great and instructions are usually spot on. Problem with the meals is that they are somewhat expensive but when going to grocery store, most times you can’t buy exact amounts you need so you end up wasting anyway. In that regard, grocery stores are redundant. Like, why do I need to buy 1/2 pound of dill for $3. I need like 3 pieces. That would literally be pennies.

Hello Fresh.

Portions OK. Prices OK. Recipes were OK.

Too much packaging waste for a couple meals however. That’ll be the reason we stop using it.

I don't use those type of services but the other day I ordered some 90% dark chocolate bars from Amazon they come in a box of 10 and it is about the size of 10 chocolate bars stacked.

But the box that came due to melting issues was 2ft x16 x16 with 2 inches of styrofoam all the way around and a dry ice pack inside. By the time I cut the thing down and put it in the trash and recycle bin all for my little package of chocolate bars I felt awful. Such of waste. The styrofoam filled half my garbage can.

My chocolate cravings now need a plan b.

We gotta stop producing so much waste, and nobody wants our recycled stuff anymore.

This is the main reason that I'd never use a service like this. I can understand the draw for some to use a meal prep company, but I enjoy going to various markets to shop. I got a free trial to Blue Apron & tried it. It seemed like a waste to me.

We've done a few Hello Fresh meals and they have been okay. We've primarily used it as a way to try new recipes that we wouldn't have otherwise.

In some geographical locations, (the Hamptons), it’s actually cheaper to use this service due the lack of big markets nearby.

I prefer going to farmer's markets

Worst case, there's always Whole Foods nearby
