If you couldn't have a Submariner, what would be your next choice?
Hypothetically, if you couldn't have a Submariner, what watch would be your next choice? Clearly there are some other Rolex's that have similar styling, but I was mostly curious about other brands you guys like in the dive watch family.

I guess a Tudor BB58 or something, or a Pelagos, but there's a huge quality difference between a Tudor and a Rolex (I know from experience, had a BB58 and sold it).
That's the closest competitor. An Omega is nice, but doesn't fill the same niche. An Omega is a great tool watch but it doesn't carry the same cache as a Rolex. A Submariner is famously fitting both on a dive boat and in a board meeting, but a Planet Ocean can't do both. Similar story with a TAG Aquaracer. They're nice too, but a LOT cheaper, so it'd be more of a beater/tool watch. Great for the dive boat, but not great at dinner. Maybe a Blancpain Fifty Fathoms would be a good Submariner substitute. 5513 & 114270
Ive only felt really happy with my 5513 and other than a brief affair with a 1980's Seiko dive watch I've not been drawn to any others.
If its due to funds or availability then have a look at the 114270 Explorer, its something I also own and enjoy and happy to recommend.

Within Rolex, I would try a GMT, Explorer 2, Explorer, or a DateJust
I personally don't need the 300m water resistance

As another rolex diver SD43. A Tudor BB58 would also be on the list. Other brand choice for a classic diver; Panerai Luminor. |
