moonphase? rolex vs lange vs breguet

Looking at 3 watches with moon:
1. Breguet 7787 enamel (prettiest?)
2. Rolex cellini 50535 (most functional?)
3. Lange saxonia moonphase (best finishing?)

What do you think? Trying to stay at 20k used and 30k new.
Patek is 50k for my tastes, too much

Any thoughts on these 3

I have the ALS so I’m a little biased, but for me it would be the ALS or the Breguet. In my opinion, they are both in a different league than the Rolex..

Can't go wrong with either the ALS or Breguet. I believe the ALS' moonphase is more accurate, the big-date makes it more practical and the all around finishing is top notch (not that Breguet is anything to sneeze at). All that said, I'm far more drawn to the Breguet aesthetically (dial layout, whimsical moonphase, Breguet hands, enamel dial and coin-edge case). Heart over brain here, I choose Breguet.

I feel the same way. Brain says ALS. Heart says breguet. Practicality says rolex due to longevity and service. UGH

Lange but i would go for the Lange 1 with moonphase. I own 2 Lange's and they are just 100% flawless. The Rolex of high end watches, they dont feel delicate and could break just by looking at them. Breguet always looks absolutely gorgeous in pictures but somehow the case never sits right on the or maybe just my wrist. My breguet's crown feels like its made of tin + i had some movement issues. Cellini is for those who are worried their dress watch wont be reconised by others. For dress there are far better alternatives and i believe Lange is just as robust.

Take a look at the reverso calender moon as well in rose gold: https://www.hodinkee.com/articles/ja...k-on-the-wrist its a stunning watch

The Cellini isn't a true moon phase, so I'd set that one aside (unless you like the aesthetic anyway, of course).

It’s a lovely looking watch but as mentioned above it’s not a true moonphase, and you’re not getting ALS finishing on it.

Have to agree with this. But maybe Rolex will update that model to a true moonphase and then that Cellini 50535 will become the rare “transitional” model.

seems like consensus here is:
1. ALS (best choice)
2. Breguet (emotional choice based on very pretty appearance)
3. Rolex is distant choice for the individual who only wants rolex, and not looking at other brands. Otherwise, not a good choice. I wonder about this, as the rolex seems more collectible to me. But maybe thats a red herring. It is a poorly done moonphase.

Do you find this wears big or true to size for a 40mm?

I would say it’s true to size. I have a 7.25 inch wrist and it wears like I would expect it to. Comparable to my other 40mm watches.

ALS. Breguet looks nice in pics but never looked right on my wrist; think it is due to the straight lugs.

Perhaps take a look at JLC. Offers some of the best movements made and very affordable (comparably speaking). They are “The watchmakers watchmaker” after all.

The Master Ultra Thin Moonphase is a lovely watch, particularly the white gold with blue enamel dial.

Why is it not considered a true moon phase?

It’s a simple solid rotating disc with a small pointer, so a rotating moon as opposed to a moon “phase”.

I like all three and I think your descriptions of each are quite accurate. You should also be able to get all of them new for around your $20,000 price point.

The Breguet is a really lovely and emotional watch. The quality is not up to the Lange (hardly anything, including Patek, is these days) but the Breguet is still very well made and I'd argue better than Patek these days. If it speaks to you and you really love it, I wouldn't hesitate to purchase it.

The Lange has the best finishing and is probably the most versatile in terms of dressing up and down. It's also quite practical with the big date. It's definitely the most logical choice but it may not speak to you as much as the Breguet.

As for the Rolex, I actually really like the looks of it. The case has a very pleasing shape with some nice details and I like the dial and the hands. The moonphase disc is quite attractive too and is something different than the usual kind. Still, the movement finishing can't compete with other brands and so the price makes it somewhat hard to swallow. Still, it's a Rolex and so servicing and reliability should be superb and the average person will know what it is.

Regardless of which watch you choose, I would look for an AD that will give you a healthy discount.

Do any of them do anything like this? Maybe Lange, but I don't know. Most moon discs look so cheap.

While the moonphase on the UJ is clearly well made, the moonphase discs on the three watches the OP is looking at are also handmade and very high quality as well if you've seen them in person. We're not talking about $1,000 mass produced watches here.
