All I can say is that life is short. Do whatever makes you happy. If you enjoy keeping it pristine and just wearing it in the house, nothing wrong with that. But I think that if you start wearing it your level of enjoyment goes way up.

Just wear your Rolex watches and practice good wrist awareness to avoid scratches. Wear the Seiko as a true beater.

The Rolex is more for going out. Other stuff is just worn day in and day out.

Yeah man, do what works best for you. I wear all my watches and nobody likes scratches but it doesn't stop me from taking them out. But to your point, some of my shoes (even cheap sneakers) are for "going out" only.

When I say life is short, it doesn't mean you should wear it. It means do what makes you happy.

Well said.

You can also put some thought ahead of time into when you’re gonna wear your watch to minimize risk.

I wear the Seiko everywhere, the beach, shower, gym, work, etc and I don't worry about it at all. I look at it as a tough, inexpensive piece that looks great. I love it and it brings happiness each time I look at it like no other watch has. I love it so much I bought my GF one and a comfy strap for her.

Looking at my Rolex makes me happy and feels good but wearing it causes some stress. I worry about damage, scratches and the "watches" health more than my own. The people that walk past me, the desks, the dirt, etc. Sometimes I would rather not wear it.

What I discovered is the good people on this site that alway say "it's made to be worn" when referring to a Rolex are correct. I am not there yet but one day I hope to wear my Rolex like my new Seiko where I am enjoying it more than being worried about it.

Sometimes there is snarky remarks made to people that post about scratches or dings and as much as this is silly, it's also not fair. Many of us Rolex owners are not rich and buying that first AK or DJ is literally the most expensive thing we ever bought. For me, it was a 15 year dream and I made it a reality. For many, they will only ever wear and own one Rolex so lets understand the pride and care these people take on their first Rolex.

So in closing, I can say I appreciate the people on here that wear and enjoy their watches for what they simply are... a watch.

I can sympathize with this sentiment, from my early collecting days when I was scraping to afford some nice watches. Every mark would hurt deeper than a physical cut. But with a little more life experience, the condition of my watches are amongst the lowest priorities in my life. They're toys, material goods. I mark it, what does that mean? $100 lost in resale value? Even if it was thousands, it is just money and can be fixed. Many other things are far more important.

I take care of my watches, don't get me wrong. Many people comment that my watches look pristine, but they aren't - I am just careful. But there is a fine line where it takes over you and starts owning you and that's unhealthy. If the watch owns you, you're much better off just selling it and wearing something else, in my view.

I speak from the bottom of my heart, that I've gone through a number of health issues (including after being hit by a car and suffering from depression) and I think one is very very fortunate and lucky to worry about the "health" of watch over their own. After those health issues I've been through in the past, and the endless darkness I felt I was in, worrying about the condition of a watch (or money, etc.) is amongst my lowest priorities in life.

Again, I don't mean to be snarky, and please don't take this as criticism or advice. Just expressing my 2 cents.

Not at all! and great response! I suppose my Blue DJ41 is a gem to me and I love the fact it's worn sparingly... To me, when I wear something sparingly it's more special to me. I have also thought that maybe I won't buy another Rolex and just enjoy the one I have now... I would rather buy my GF another one!

I was gifted my grail Rolex in March. And ironically up until today I basically said F IT. I always wanted this watch and I’m gonna wear the damn thing! But before that I had a hard time putting in on.
I’ve come to the realization it’s time to build my story with it..

You are talking about a Rolex not a triple complication Patek. You cannot hurt it. You should wear and enjoy. You may be more stressed from not wearing it.

I find myself feeling this way as well quite often. I too am new to the more expensive watch life and find myself constantly worrying about messing them up, I am hoping that it just comes with time and being more comfortable wearing the piece

Your comfort level wearing your Rolex will evolve over time, just as how dirty you allow your new car to get before you wash it.

I think it's perfectly normal to be concerned about your $10,000.00 (+/-) watch being damaged. Let your comfort level evolve at its own pace and don't let anyone tell you how concerned, or unconcerned you should be. It seems to me that if you are feeling that you're not getting your money's worth out of your expensive watch, that might be the first step in convincing you to wear it more often.

The same is true with respect to when and where you wear your watch. The longer you have it and the more comfortable you get with it, the more you'll find yourself wearing it doing physical things that might have a higher risk of damaging the watch. I don't think, though, I'd ever wear a day/date digging ditches.

I would argue the biggest reason I love my rolex steel sports watches is the pure piece of mind that it is a TANK and indestructible and can be worn in any occasion and activity. It is part of it's charm. I actually got rid of my AP due to what you are describing. I don't have these concerns with rolex.

I understand the stress of not damaging such a big investment, but… You did not buy only a luxury good. You bought a tool watch. A Datejust is almost as tough as a G-Shock. The scratches are the price we pay for using a tool.

As you can see, your comments are similar to other relatively "new" owners. Many long time owners (20-30 yrs) enjoy looking at their watches and reflecting back on their history with their watch, scratches and all. If you like, at regular service intervals, you can get it polished up to new. If that makes you feel better. It's like rubbing off the history to me though.

You won’t be laying on your deathbed stating, “I’m glad I kept my Rolex watches in mint condition”.

Wear and enjoy them. The more life experiences you have with them, the less you will worry about the wear and tear that come with life.

Learn to enjoy them. It’s a simple decision that you can make.

It's great that you find joy in wearing your SKX. It's a great watch and ISO certified for diving which is rare at that price. The fact you enjoy watches for what they are and not their monetary value is a refreshing and honest watch geek trait.

When I got my first Rolex I treated it differently to my others watches. It was my most expensive watch purchase and also the first watch I ever wore that's widely know to the general public. After some time you'll get more comfortable and confident in your watch and be at peace with any minor blemishes. If something major happens, like you chop it in half by mistake, collect your errant limb and feel free to complain all you wish here on TRF.

Watch Happiness and Stress

I totally agree with Adam. I purchased a new Rolex Oyster Perpetual this past February and have yet to wear it. I purchased a Bell and Ross 03-92 (instrument) Desert Type watch June of 2017 and it's still in the box. These may be the only really expensive watches I'll ever buy and keeping them pristeen is of the utmost importance to me. I need to wear them at least ocassionally to enjoy my purchases and I do have them fully insured. My everyday watch is my Tag Heuer Professional and my Citizen Eco-Drive.

It's just a watch. Wear it. If you can't use something you buy, sell it.

Enjoy your watch and don't stress, it is not worth it. I wear mine same as I would wear a $250 Seiko.

I also bought a Seiko SKX recently. It is a cool watch. When I wear it it reminds me that I don’t have to spend thousands of dollars to have a watch that I enjoy. It’s in the rotation. I prefer my sub most of the time. The longer you’ve owned your Rolexes, the less you’ll worry about scratches etc. I sent my Sub to RSC for service about a year ago. It came back looking brand new. It really blew me away. It has a two year warranty and looks like new again. Dings and scratches will be dealt with during service. You really don’t need to worry about normal wear and tear.

I own a 116710 (12 years old) and a 126600 (0.5 years old). I bought my GMT back when a watch was just a watch. I wear it to everything...soccer with kids, tennis, snorkeling, hiking, weight lifting. Basically I treat it like a watch. I don’t ever plan to sell it. I bought it for $5950, now it is going for >$9k on used market. I enjoy it every day. Money well spent. My Sea Dweller on the other hand is worn with care, no more than a week at a time. It doesn’t have a scratch on it, whereas my GMT has a patina. I am not sure I want to keep the SD 43 because of my small wrist, so I am careful with it.
Bottom line...if you plan to keep it wear the s—t out of it so you can enjoy it. After a lifetime of joy, it will increase in value regardless, not bad for being “just a watch”

Just pretend the Rolex is your Seiko. Who gives a crap if it gets scratched? If it doesn't buff out you have a 1 of 1 no ones else has.

The more you wear your Rolex the more you'll enjoy it and the stress will eventually diminish. I used to take my SKX and a couple other Seikos when I traveled for safety I thought but missed wearing my Rolex, now I just take one Rolex and wear it 24/7, no one notices and i feel much better. I'm sure you have wrist awareness so just take it easy and try wearing it a little more and more and you'll be fine.

Get rid of the SKX and you'll find out how much you'd reach for the Sub
