1988 DJ 16233 questions
Hi guys, it seems there are two styles of hour markers on these tapestry dial DJs. The more rectangular style and the tapered stick style. Does anyone know what year the change took place? It seems the rectangular style is on the older 16013s and early 16233s. Anyone has more info on this?
Also the datewheel on my 88 DJ is white, I’ve seen some that are champagne/gold in color. Is that just the aging process or that’s the original color from factory? Here’s a closeup of dial in question |

Thank you! You can really see the texture of the dial via the cyclops too! I’d stare at it all day and not being able to get any work done!

Thanks for the images, but I was trying to find out more info like period correct datewheel and dial. Or we’re both dials in production at the same period?

Comparing pics answers a lot of questions. Should you have a champagne date wheel, yes. Does anyone on earth know about your markers? Don't know but if you spent hours looking at images and comparing the markers with the age of the watch you could probably figure it out. If you do that work, let us know the results!
Research is half the fun of vintage. |

One thing of note, it seems the silver and albino tapestry dials have white date discs. Which got me to question whether mine is a silver or champagne dial as they’re somewhat close in appearance (pictures online have the champagne tapestry range from light to dark gold, depending on how the person feels like adjusting contrast that day, not a super reliable source). So I went to Mike at RolliWorks, he seems to think it’s a champagne dial and that may be during one service, they swapped out the date discs for a white one, whether by request of the owner or it just happens to be one they have on hand... Well, back to documenting the various variations of the infamous tapestry dial.. |

Wait, what about the champagne tapestry dial? You have a slate, silver, and champagne dials, right?

Don’t forget that the Datejust is THE Rolex, produced in extraordinarily large amount of numbers. Never obsessed over like the sports and chronograph models. Many will have replacement parts of which most are probably oem, but may not have come originally as purchased. Enjoy finding the set-up you most like or purchase dial and hands separately.
