No clarification necessary. I think we know exactly what we're dealing with here.

The Daytona is too small, the dial is much too busy and the lack of contrast makes it hard to read. Also, the YMII is just weird.

Having a solid yellow gold watch doesn't buy you class or taste.
Quite the opposite

But a vintage day date might be different since Arnold Palmer wore one ;)

1. While I've never actually owned an homage, the better ones I've seen in person (Mkii and Ginault) get you at least 90% close to an actual Rolex in terms of quality.

2. The 36mm Explorer is just the right size for most men's wrists, so the 39mm just looks oversized.

Too busy to move the wrist down a couple of inches to cover the steering wheel's logo? Be advised that this is what's known as "a likely story".

IMO, Daytona ceramic is overpriced and overhyped. It's a beautiful watch, but the 16k grey market price tag is just ridiculous for a SS watch. But of course, there's a market for it, so we can't blame them.

The dJ 41 looks great on younger people too, definitely not an elderly man's watch.

The jubilee bracelet looks great.

Yellow gold or diamond dial is not for everyone, however, some people can pull it off without looking like a rapper, jerk, bragging, or overcompensating for a certain body part.

People who hate on people for posting picture of their cars are just haters. They might as well hate too on people who admits in the forum that they are doctors, lawyers, or other highly compensated professionals, or have an "md" in their user ID. As long as they are nice people, it doesn't bother me when others post pictures of their cars, expensive hobbies, or vacations.

There is no right size watch. We all have different body types/size and sense of style.

Saying that homage is 90% of a Submariner, is like saying a male transvestite is 90% woman. I find the last 10% significant - in either domains.

So here's another unpopular Rolex opinion; the hypocrisy of those who embrace an owners $18,000 Rolex but despise their $70,000 luxury car when by their morals the comparative value and usefulness of each should provide the exact opposite reaction.

Exactly. And by what logic would someone in their 40s or 50s at the height of their career have five Rolexes worth $50,000 in a drawer and yet willingly drive a 2000 Chevy Cavalier and vacation in Toledo Ohio at a Motel 6? Would it not be smarter to make the correlation that anyone who can spend huge money on a frivolous piece of luxury wrist jewelry can also be assumed to be in a successful career, drive a luxury car, and take luxury vacations?

So there is another unpopular Rolex opinion; it appears that some Rolex owners misunderstand the reason for its existence which isn't to tell the time but rather to reflect its owners lifestyle. And if they feel disconnected from that lifestyle perhaps they are wearing the wrong brand.

I used to like a lot my 4 Rolex, sub C ln and lv, blnr and 116515. But after getting my first Patek I couldn't wear them anymore as I found them to be awful comfort wise, whereas with my PP and AP you basically forget you are wearing a watch, yes they are that comfortable, with Rolex you feel them on the wrist all the time. So the problem of comfort and also the fact that I wasn't always comfortable with the brand recognition, much prefer my very under the radar watches, the only remark I got was a friend who asked me if my PP 5712 was a Royal Oak, that's it, in basically 3+ years of ownership

Edit:

I imagine most folks on a Rolex forum have some degree of success. To respond to others' posts above, I think it is relevant and not necessarily bragging to show pictures or describe events that are luxurious in nature and include your watch. But people who, for no apparent or relevant reason, shoot pictures of their watch right next to their car logo, or choose a username on a watch forum of something like "La Ferrari" are just plain trying to impress folks with their other stuff. Why do people think it makes perfect sense to shoot every picture of their watch with their steering wheel logo fully exposed, but might think it was awkward to shoot every Rolex picture next to the "Sub Zero" plaque on their refrigerator?

A picture of your watch on vaca looking over a beautiful ocean view is relevant. A picture of your watch next to the hood ornament of your car is not.

FWIW, I don't think that those who know me would accuse me of being jealous of what others drive here.

You sound exactly like the kind of guy who would take a wrist shot of your Rolex with your BMW logo in the background if you know what I mean.

There is nothing wrong with owning nice things. Most people here on TRF are "successful" but if I had to guess I'd say that most would not look down on the "pool boy" or consider their Rolex a frivolous piece of wrist jewelry only meant to project their status.

If this were a BMW forum would it also be bragging to post the watch/steering wheel photos?

ETA: I like those photos. I also like the expensive vacation photos with the watches.

I think what's missing here is context.

Speaking only for myself, I never take a watch photo at the steering wheel of my car because I want to show off my car brand. I actually find this criticism shocking, I never thought people would even notice let alone find it offensive. I do it because behind the wheel in traffic 2 hours a day is just about the only time I get a moment to myself without co-workers or family members around watching me do something for myself let alone something as strange as taking a series of wrist shots of my pricey trinkets.

Taking a photo in front of my Sub Zero refrigerators would be ludicrous and arrogant, I get that, as I don't spend 2 hours a day in front of my refrigerators. I'd have to seek that out, deliberately stage a contrived event. Taking photos at the wheels of my BMW's makes perfect sense as that's where I spend about 75% of my daily private time. I'm bored silly in bumper-to-bumper traffic, I glance at the time to see if I'm going to be late for work, the hand positions, lighting, and angle strike me as interesting, the speedo and tach shapes compliment the watch design, I grab the iPhone, great shot, I share it among aficionado's online.

In the context of my daily commute 5 days a week and my 'dad shuttle' to and from the kids sporting activities all weekend and the fact that the majority of my alone time comes behind the wheel I find nothing disingenuous or conceited about sharing a shot of my Rolexes in their natural environment.

My status is questionable at best. I also drive a plain car. Brand new, but plain. I just like Rolexes. At 47, I consider myself a success. I got over buying into a lifestyle when I was in my twenties.

Cars and other material goods have their own beauty, as does a nice mountain or beach backdrop. I think what people are offended by is the fact that when these shots are posted the owner is doing so with the intention of announcing he owns another expensive product rather than to capture the beauty of it along with the watch.

Exactly! I like cars so if someone wants to show off their nice car I'm all for it but show off the whole car not just the logo on the wheel. All the logo on the wheel does is say "hey guys I own a _____"

I can understand why you post the pics you do. But first off, this is a thread that is really poking fun at members' stereotypical actions with perhaps a bit of hyperbole thrown in for good measure. But surely you can see that there are quite a few member who pose pictures of their relevant watches next to something or other (perhaps some uber-expensive wallet I have never heard of) in a gratuitous way. If it's a thread called "Your watch and your favorite leather accessory," it's relevant. If it's just a picture of your watch and it happens to be two inches from a $5000 Gucci bag, a $500 wallet with AmEx Black card, and your Porsche keys, I feel like the poster is perhaps trying to impress me unnecessarily.

You guys do realize they use bmws and mercs as crap taxis in many parts of the world right?

And that 90% are leased here in California republic?

So let's not get hung up on these steering wheel shots because it's really not a show off moment. In fact, it's just their way of strongly suggesting how much more important their Rolex watch is since it actually retains value.

So Who wants my off lease 5 series? #builtfor1stowner

30% of the threads on this forum are "show your Rolex and your stupid expensive consumer good". This is the wrong place to complain about showing off.

As it happens, I drive a car made by brand X. Brand X is irrelevant to the world of horology, which is why I only discuss it in the open forum on car threads.

I don't agree that the function of a watch is to reflect its owner's lifestyle. I have 10 watches but only one lifestyle. Much more of this, and we'll be posting pdf files of our bank statements.

Someone on another forum started a thread asking for everyone's resume so that he could judge if he should listen to their advice.

Then we are agreed. The photography of steering wheels will be permitted, but controlled, and Chiboy will give up protection in the East - and there will be the peace.
