I think it would make a great daily wearer, I love my YM. I wear it in rotation but personally love the PCL's and the added "bling" (if you can call it that) the platinum bezel and pcl's give it Dont think twice, your going to love it
As to second hand as others have said it all depends on the piece. I have seen some look as new and others look terrible, just keep looking until you find what your looking for. It would appear you may need to spend more like $5800-$6500 to get one LNIB condition

The SS/PT Yachtmaster is an awesome watch and it will make an excellent everyday wearer.

So it's funny to read people agonizing over which watch to get. Yeah, I do/did the same thing. (IMO) The reality is that whatever watch you get, you'll be totally in love with it - kind of like when you have a child. And you'll soon put another watch on your list. Having just one Rolex watch simply won't do. Trust me on this.
Take your time. Make several visits to check out watches in person. For me, my preferences changed after mulitple visits to the AD. Ultimately I bought the watch ('used' GMTC II) that spoke to me more than the others. Good luck on your search/decision. Many people say that this is really the fun part. So try and enjoy it, ok? And remember to send us pics if you end up adopting a new baby. We'll support you in whatever you decide. *check out Mortgageguy's pics and try and tell me that the YM isn't a beauty. Man! Great choice! Love love love the YMI in platy, still wear it in rotation, mostly for dressier occasions. Was my only Rolex/daily wearer for 10 yrs, looked awesome after light buffing. Really like the size/shape of the case and the subtle look. Like the relative rarity. Also love to race sailboats but can't imagine using a YM (I orII) to do that work. Enjoy it in good health!!

YM is a great watch, but you should consider a Sub as well.

Second hand is the way to go. The body style of the YM is similar to the Daytona with the down turned lugs and finish of the body. So if that is what attracted you to the Daytona (over the chronograph function that is rarely used) that may be the way to go. PCL's are well PCL's, they show wear; after a while they get their own patina. The finish of the YM is at a higher level than the other Rolex sport models. The brightness of the dial is a nice touch over the standard black dials, and in direct sunlight it sparkles.....gorgeous. That said, hard to go wrong with a classic sub 16610, Exp II or GMT II.

PS: Look forward to the wrist shot.

Yachtmaster is a beauty. As long as whatever you purchase is authentic, you will be happy with a previously loved watch. Good luck!

Cheers, all. Just 19 more hours till I'm in posession!
Thanks, also, for all the great pics. I love the arty ones but always found it really difficult to find decent pictures on-the-wrist, as it's hard to picture how it will look in context. BTW, MortgageGuy, even though I'm a brit, I'm pretty sure I spy a Target shopping trolley in your first picture :-) Hopefully will post some pics tomorrow. |

First of all, can't you get a used Daytona for about the same price as a YM?
I started out treating the YM like any other watch, but I feel it picks up scratches and other damage quicker and easier. It is also a watch that unlike most other models looks better in mint condition, so I have started choosing when I wear it more carefully. |

I have the watch! An exciting day, all round...
The only problem is that I thought I was quite a good photographer, but it seems that photographing watches is a special talent that I apparently do not possess! Oh well, these will do for starters, via the iPhone - once the Nikon has charged I'll try again At least I get to show a variety of sleeve styles! I am a Rolex-owner! Cheers, GeorgeAb and StalkerMan. |

#ArcticMoose - you photograph your YM in a fishtank...? Sheesh - no wonder it picks up some scratches :-)

Looks like being a "watch mule" was worth it.
Best of health to wear it. PS. George - the watch was spotless and the packaging 1st Class.

Platty YM is my first and only Rolex at the time. This to me is the perfect watch because of its versatility. It could be worn with any type of apparel, from a bathing suit, to jeans, to a suit/tux and the platinum dial/bezel combo goes with any color.
Oh and by the way, mine is pre-loved and everyone that notices it thinks it's brand new. |
