Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Hockeyguy. While I haven’t tried on the DSSD, the 18 to 19mm thickness will be too much for me in the long term. I have owned a Pam 111 and thought it was substantial, and it is slightly below 15mm thick. Sure I could pull it off, but I grew tired of the mass.

I like the looks of the DSSD but have realized that a maximum 40mm diameter watch with 47mm lugs is ideal (read Sub) for my 6.75” to 7” wrist.

It is nice to have variety though and the DSSD would certainly have wrist presence.

If one can afford to have a DSSD and other more manageable watches that would be, IMHO, ideal.

My MAIN issue with the deepsea is the coronet on the dial. i think it is funny looking. I want the regular coronet.

I also concur with this. I have only tried the 116600 on once at a GTG, but it was enough for me to decide that I loved it. Enjoy yours!

What is different about the coronet on the DS than other Subs?

nice review you say its not as big as a planet ocean, is it as heavy ? as i had a planet ocean and sold it as it was not very comfy to wear for me. Or is it the fact that the grip lock makes it fit better

It's the biggest baddest watch Rolex produce and many love it and just as many dislike it.

I'm in the love category; the size is great (although I prefer something smaller with a suit), the weight is satisfying, the domed crystal is simply beutiful, the bezel is cool, the Glidelock is WOW and yes it can go to crazy depths too if needed but like all Rolex it keeps great time.......let's wait for the reasons some dislike it

I ended up driving 500 miles to pick up a BNIB SD. To me, there is no reason for the DS to be over 18mm. The 4000M depth rating is not justifiable for any human use.

I actually like the 43m diameter, since 40mm is a minimum for my wrist, but I'm not a fan of undersize dials. If the watch is 3mm larger, make the dial 3mm larger. The dials on the SD and the DS are the same size. The writing on the ring around the DS's dial is not the problem. To me it's the fact that they used a 'filler' around the dial to take up the extra diameter, instead of makig the dial and hands larger for better readability.

Don't get me wrong; I admire the DS greatly, it's a wonderful piece of engineering, and it's beautiful to look at. I congratulate you on its purchase. It's just that for me, the extra size, (and money), were not justified. But that's what makes horse racing, or Rolex fans!

Good post, I agree 100%, my Deepsea wears smaller than the Planet Ocean Chronograph I used to have, it's more comfortable too. Just wish the bracelet was a little wider that's all!

& I like the way the classic Rolex oyster bracelets taper...for me, w/ smaller wrists, it's moe comfortable.

FWIW, the LV fits great. Clasp centers on wrist.

Hope you don't mind my asking but how many links do you have on the 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock sides of the watch and what hole is it in on the clasp? I've got a 6.5" wrist as well. Thanks in advance Barry.

Clasp is adjusted "next to shortest" hole. Hope that makes since.

I agree the bracelets on Rolex should be wider, and why do they taper anyway. The DSSD is a monster of a watch but its superb and i love it. Tried one on in an AD and one thing you can say is, like the advert for Yorkie bars, it aint for girls !

Thanks for taking the time to write a thoughtful post. I am one of those who dislike the idea and look (from photos) of the '... escape valve' text. I will check it out again when I am next at an AD.

First, you really have to see the DS in person and try it on before passing judgement. The Original Gas Escape Valve and Ring Lock System wording around the inside of the bezel is virtually invisible in real life! It is nowhere near as bold as it looks on pictures/magazines where the dial is blown up 20 times (like the cover of the April 09 Watchtime). In fact, I can't even see the wording when I look at the dial to check time. And there is NO way a person even sitting next to you and looking down at your watch would even see the writing- I have asked people and they have to bend down so that their nose is close to the dial to even make out the fact that there IS wording. And even when you hold the watch right up to your face (which you dont normally do anyway) the writing is subtle and not nearly as bold as even the white Rolex wording at the top of the dial.

Second, the size is nowhere near as "huge" or "monstrous" as people on this forum make it out to be. I wear suits everyday (investment banker) and the Deepsea fits EASILY under my cuffs- I wear standard Boss shirts. For reference, I am about 6ft tall, maybe 195 lbs, relatively slim, and wrist size is maybe 6 3/4". This watch is actually smaller that the ubiquitous Breitling Chronomats, and of course much smaller than the Avenger series as well, and smaller than the Planet Ocean line as well. It wears relatively small. Even the depth does not actually stand out at all when on the wrist, even showing outside the cuff. I also have a Submariner, and this DS compares very favourably in all aspects. It is just as comfortable, but has a much nicer wrist presence without screaming for attention.

The glidelock is amazing- it can let the watch rest snugly against your wrist, where it takes almost all of the weight away, or when your wrist swells slightly, you can keep loosening it in tiny increments until it feels great agan. I honestly cant imaging wearing the Sub again after this experience. I asked a few friends to look at both the DS and Sub on my wrist from a few feet away, and the consensus was that the DS looked much better and seemed to be a better size than the Sub, which looked very small in comparison.

In any event, this is just my view, but the pictures and negative comments on this forum on the DS kept me from buying it for months, but as soon as I tried it on I realized that the reality is far, far different in a positive way

Excellent post. I agree to all statements made. I bought my Deepsea 2 months ago and I am wearing it every day. It is a very comfortable watch and one of the best watches I have tried and worn.

I think the Deep Sea is a wonderful watch and a really great piece of engineering. The size is perfect for anybody with a wrist larger than 7"; I personally have less than 7" and that's why I wear a classic Sea-Dweller, it simply fits perfect for me.

The only negative point for me is the writing "..ring lock..." on that ring around the bezel. How beautiful this watch could be, if Rolex had used this extra mm for a larger bezel and larger hands!!!

Thanks for all of your comments. I been wearing the DSSD now for about 2 months and it has basically replaced my GMT II C - it is probably the most comfortable Rolex I have owned and this is probably due to the tapering of the bracelet- if it was actually wider, like some people here would like to see, then it would add weight and bulk to its look- the tapering makes it totally appropriate and certainly not too big for dress
