I would think at any Rolex AD. My AD here in Hamilton has a display case full of them.

Wouldn't it be awesome if they continued to reissue some of their more vintage models a la Tudor Heritage? I keep hoping their Big Blocks will be next.

Not a chrono, but this old girl from around 1945 or so is still chugging merrily along.

U buy a Casio/Timex when u need to be on time, u buy a Rolex/Tudor when u don't have to be.
That said my Tudor is 43 years old and keep perfect time while still looking modern and classy enough to still being talked about, will ppl still talk about your Timex in 50 years? I think not. |

Quite true it does cost to test every single movement and because of the vast amount of movements tested by Rolex each year they have there own machine at the COSC. Now in proportion of movements tested movements like the ETA 2824-2T and the Valjoux 7750 have one of the best track records for first time passes at the COSC both these movements are used in the Tudor range.Today the COSC test is little more than pure marketing, as with very careful regulating most any modern day movement could pass this now quite old and out dated test.

Looking at the vintage market, I don't see the price difference. So not sure where the higher prices for older Tudors originate. Eta movement isn't a big deal and I've looked at Tudor many times but its ultimately hard to justify especially in older ones. Also I wonder what the status of swatch's decision to refuse to sell era movements to other brands.

So the bottom line is; it is ALL about marketing. While I owned several (high end vintage and new) Rolexes in the past, comparing them to my (vintage and new) Todors, I could never ever experience any quality differences. And for my watches (and I know that can change from watch to watch) I noticed that generally speaking my Tudors tended to run more precise and more trouble free. I came to the conclusion that all you pay for is the name and you pay for it through the nose. For example a nice vintage Tudor Chrono sets you back 5 grand while you pay for essentially the same design, minus the date (vintage Cosmograph) 25 grand or more. And that, by the way, had another effect for me. I was always more concerned to bang up, especially the vintage Rolexes, so I ended up enjoying them less than my Tudors. And while I know that on this forum there will be tons of people that disagree (even though I am not speaking about collectors), the way I see it is that Rolex is for the people that need to buy prestige, while Tudor buyers are the smart ones that pay the right price for the same quality and style. And because I am generally more drawn to understatement I am now exclusively into Tudor (...of course until a breathtaking Rolex comes along ) |

I think that too many folks get hung up on "ETA Movement"..
Rolex uses only the base ebauche ETA (movement), or only the plates and gearing.. as do Ball, Ulysse Nardin, Breitling, Omega, Hamilton, Longines, IWC, and a host of other high-end watches.. The ebauche is then fitted, machined, and tuned to the manufacturers specifications.. It's like saying Jeff Gordon just uses a Chevy engine at NASCAR..

Fit and finish of a Tudor is on par with Rolex. You can knock the quality or the movement. They are a great timepiece |
