Considering the 8% markup the other day translated into a 8% bump in pre-owned asking prices I would say yes over time (especially if you buy like new from a trusted reseller)...

If this logic holds, then I must be getting paid to wear my explorers since they'd easily sell for more than twice than what I paid for them seventeen years ago.

kind of true . I bought mine in 05 and payed 4200 plust tx's which came to 4600 and some change. I have seen 05 subs on the bay sell for about 4600 to 4800.
But if someone were to buy one today they would have to keep it for a long time and hope that the retail price for sub's hits around 11k since people usually want to pay 20-30% less for a used one. |

A Z-serial SD was about $4700 in 2006. You would struggle to find any SD in decent shape under 5K.
I have always maintained that a Rolex is essentially a free watch, as long as you keep it for a few years. The only way you'll lose money is by flipping. Remember, flippers never win, and winners never flip. |

I bought my 16610 sub in 2008 in Canada from an AD at $4700 from list price of $6200. I have had offers on my 16610 in the $5000-$5500 range

In actual money, you can probably get your money back on just about any Rolex if you keep it long enough. But if you factor inflation in, then it's questionable as to whether or not it was a good deal.
I bought my first Rolex (SS OP no date) in 1971 for about $200. I could probably sell it for that today. No, don't bother looking for it in the For Sale section.

If you hold on to anything long enough it will be worth at least its MSRP. It may be 2 or 3 generations from now and you won't be able to enjoy the sales, but...

if you take into account inflation + rolex prices increases ... then i believe its quite plausible to achieve the free sub

Kind of. Mine is 20 years old and worth more now than when I bought it. My wife bought one a couple of years back and the shop promised to credit the full price to her next (higher priced) Rolex.

They are when u use Tesco vouchers to pay for one, last year I exchanged £940 of Tesco vouchers for £3760 of goldsmiths vouchers and bought a 16610 sub for the same value, sold it and that paid for our family holiday to Lanzarote for three weeks.
Did not need to keep it as already have one in my collection from 1994/5 with all accessories, which cost me £1492. And it does not get any wrist time, as the dssd rules the wrist !!!! |

I misread the OPs first post.
If you pay MSRP, it is possible years later down the line. If you buy it from the for sale section and decide to sell it , you won't take any huge hits as they are already discounted hence my example. I bought it for 6500 and I'm sure I can sell it for 6500 now even though I've worn it couple of times. |

yes.
its a pleasant thought and i think it is just about attainalble. maybe not in the strictest of investment strategies but as a loosely based theory here on TRF to put a smile on our faces and consider that we can have all this joy on our wrist and get our money back if needed down the road... i like that idea a) you may have to let enough time go by. b) it will help if you don't over pay when you buy it. my blue TT is 20 years old and i have seen them sell for more than the retail price i payed.

Free, no. Cheap, yes. Most of the time you will lose a few hundred bucks if you buy a nice used one and wear it. What would you rather wear: a Citizen for a few hundred that will be worth next to nothing after a few years of wear and tear? or a Rolex that will depreciate the same amount?

Let's say you go buy one for the very fair price of $5000. At 8% a Sub or SD one bought on the forums for $5K would double in value in 9 years.
So, go buy 2 Subs, stick one in a vault for 9 years, and then sell it for $10K. Free Watch. |
