In lineup of the recent decade maybe the Y-series LV, the real anniversary Sub or an original M-series black bezel non ceramic GMT w/ 3186 mvt. Or even the last of the Zeniths. But b/c these are made in much smaller quantities, that would be the reason they may be collectible. Most of them will always be taken care of.

that's a good point about people taking care of their watches now a days...

also non "collectors" owning several pieces, means that there will be that many more floating around in 10-15yrs time

When I was young people collected stuff to enjoy. They never thought about how much it would be worth in the future. How many Micky Mantle base ball cards ended up in the spokes of bicycle wheels. In the 80s companies geared up and started to mass produce items and call them Collectible IE Hess trucks, Barbie dolls and such. Today most of those items are worthless. IMO get your good watches out of the safe and put them on and enjoy. If your watch is worth more in the future consider your self lucky.

Anything Rolex makes that is green - green Subs and the green Milgauss.

I honestly never thought of a watch as an investment before this forum. I just always looked at Rolex as a solid brand with a great history and product that holds its value well. If I can recoup my money after enjoying the watch for a time, it is just a bonus. If I wanted to make money there are far better ways to do it.

As much as i agree with what's been written above, i cant help but think that the 18k zenith daytonas might creep up in value some day. A lot of watch for as little as $15k... not many really nice pieces available for less than that these days...

I think you are right. And agree with the "anything green" statement. Also, in the not too distant past (Rolex history wise) I think the 160000 subs are worth sticking in the safe for a few years...

I know this is an old thread, but a good contender for a rare piece would be the YG YMII which briefly had gold hands, now changed to blue

This..

Though not sure you would consider this to be in the current line up as the TOG has been discontinued and this is a limited edition.

We have a pretty good idea how many total Rolex are produced annually, but I would love to see production by model. . . Not to say that would impact desirability, but it would be interesting. If I had to guess, worldwide Submariner, both date and nondate are the most numerous. Followed by Explorer. For dress, I would guess SS Datejust. It would be cool to see production figures.

Current line up Rolexes expected to be "desireable" vintages?

How in the world would you know production count of each model per year??

Ken,

I THINK YOU OWN ALL OF MY HOLY GRAILS! I have been looking around for a mint porcelain off and on for a long time and here you are with one just laying around. Do you also have a 6241 Black dialed PN on jubilee band in 14k??!! ;-) I envy your collection and agree with your sentiment. Rule number one is to buy what you will enjoy and then whatever comes after is the gravy. Hope all had a great weekend...

Because Green tends to be used for anniversary editions, like the 2003 Green Sub and the Milgauss GV (not the blue one).

Now--it is like trying to find a needle in haystack finding minty rare old pieces like Big Crowns, old Daytonas, 6541, 6542 etc. etc. For me--with modern watches--if you like it--buy it -wear it and enjoy it--but don't expect any to make you money or be in huge demand--because they won't IMHO!!
Even vintage by the way--don't buy for investment--buy because you love them and want to wear and enjoy them--no other reason! Every watch I own--I wear and love!!!
Agreed, it certainly won't be due to rarity. Not only that, modern day watches are made with superior materials, which are made to withstand the test of time. Most of these watches today, especially with ceramic bezels will probably look exactly the same in 50 years. Too many of them will be maintained in mint condition. There's probably not going to be tropical dials, no hands and markers patina, etc...

It's basically Russian Roulette - just choose the model you like and wear it... and hope one day it happens to be a rare print, or has some kind of discoloration haha
