Sorry to see BMW so low on the list.
I leased my first one 4 years ago and it was very reliable for 3 years til I traded it in last year for a newer one (which has also been trouble free). Maybe they become problematic when they get older and out of warranty. That said, the driving experience is vastly superior to the various Japanese cars that I had always owned in the past (Acura, Toyota and Mazda). If the car is fun 99% of the time then maybe it is worth couple extra trips to the shop... |

Regarding the steering, its a mixed bag, you're coming from an E90, which are heavier on average than most other BMWs. In the E46s they started heavy, went extremely light, then went somewhere in between along the model life, my 328i ('98) steering has almost no power assistance while the 330ci ('01) can be turned with two fingers easily. I've also got a relative with an identical month 330ci and its heavy. E60s are the same, you can have two identical cars from the same year and one is heavy while one is light. The only ones you can count on being the same are the Z4Ms with no power assist. I have no idea why there is so much variation on the steering weight but its been like that on BMWs since the E36s. Depending on the model and equipment you also have active steering, servotronic steering etc... all create more differences.

I'll never buy anything but a Honda from now on.
I'll probably buy a new Accord in two years.

Believe me I rather have boring and reliable. I got rid of the S class and got a Toyota 4 Runner and I admit it is a boring car but does the job and does it well! |

For what its worth, we've been down the Japanese route twice, with a Toyota Paseo and a Holden Calais with a Nissan engine/drivetrain, and both were disasters. We ended up replacing that Paseo with an 18 year old 318IS because we just couldn't afford to keep the Toyota on the road, and my best mate now drives a Jaguar X-type because his Honda Legend nearly bankrupted him. There's good and bad in every maker.

A company here in town uses Toyota Corollas and Ford Focuses for pick up and delivery of medical samples. They drive them to 250,000 miles and keep copious records on them. The upkeep costs on the Corollas is 23.4 cents/mile and on the Focuses it is 23.6 cents/mile. I suspect that people are just hesitant to find fault with vehicles they like.

This list isn't accurate, people's perception and biases come in to play.

/\ ..just like many other things.
Ive had my '94 Mazda MX6 since new, tho only 115,000+KM now, she's holding up quite well.. besides the usual wear and tear.. Hope to hang on to it, for collector plates....LOL.

IMO you can't go wrong with either a toyota, honda or nissan. I've had all three at one time or another & they all make very reliable cars.
