i always find the american tipping culture very funny.
if the service in a restaurant is excellent, i tip (around 10-15%) but if i am not satisfied why would i leave more money? there is a bill which i pay. i have never received any tip for any work i have done.
maybe restaurant-hotel owners should start paying their employees and stop expecting customers paying their wage. really strange hearing about underpaid staff in case of a michelin star restaurant or a 5star hotel.

I tip every service person who I deal with. Service industry workers make very little for what they put up with. Tip, and tip often.

Most of my nights with my girlfriend and friends involve going to a restaurant and a bar, therefore I got pretty used to tip and I gladly do it (especially if I have a good service). Waiters are usually friendly and kind to me so I always leave more than 15% and am glad to see a smile on their face when they see it. I also leave a tip if somebody puts gas in my car (mostly because it is at the gas station near my house and the guy who works there has served my parents for several years, he has always been a very nice man).

Great service = Great tip. Simple.

If you don't like tipping, don't go to Vegas...everyone expects it. But hey these people are in the service industry and I do not mind tipping. If on vacation I normally give a pretty sizable tip up front, and it sets the pace for good service, strong drinks, etc.

I tip 20% in restaurants, sometimes a bit higher if they went out of their way to do something special.

The movers I had a year ago worked so very hard, I tipped them $50 each, they were shocked and very grateful.

At Starbucks, I'll sometimes toss the change in the box, sometimes not.

I tip everybody, even the cable guy. In return, I get great service even while others are not being tended too.

Restaurants - over 20% unless they really screw up

Bars - 30% (especially if crowded)

Hotel room $2 - $5/night depending on hotel (the secret here is to tip every morning as many hotels will have different staff cleaning your room everyday).

Taxi - 15% - 20%

Porters $5 I rarely have more than two bags

Hairdresser 20%

I tip all the people in my building at xmas time, but will give them something on the side if they go out of their way to help me. Same for the valets.

I only tip my housekeeper at xmas, but considering that she is in my home every week, I like for her to be happy working for me. I gave her $1000 last year and she cried. That spring she used the money to visit her home for the first time in 20 years. It really made a world of difference. I'll do the same for the new housekeeper here this december.

These workers in the service field live off the tips. Tipping comes a long way especially if you receive the service quite often. Like more food, better/faster service, etc.

In the UK it's normally just restaurants, hairdressers, cute bar gals and taxis.

Europe mix and match but similar to UK and of course the concierge for getting you into difficult restaurants

But it's definitely creeping in via the US back door over here...... I went up to a bar in a west end the other week and ordered a round of cocktails (so no table service) and found a 12.5% service charge added to the already expensive cocktails just for making them and handing to me across the bar........My change was then given to me on a little silver tray also encouraging me to leave that as well..........The trouble is we never complain...... Especially if there are glamourous gals around

My biggest gripe is when you are in a group of people at an expensive restaurant when the bill may come to quite a sizeable figure. The tip then is probably more than the waitress earns in a day for a few hours work and I just don't believe they receive it. But the Brit in me still just quietly pays......

Often, the tip is added to he bill and then when you pay by card, the machine asks you again if you want to add another tip........I wonder how many customers tip twice unknowingly

I tip in the usual spots (restaurant, bar, taxi, barber) but get pretty generous in two areas 1) vacation resort, even all inclusive I tip a lot, 2) if I'm doing very well in a casino, the dealer gets a cut.

I was in Vegas last weekend and the dealer was a complete a-hole. There was a young Asian couple at the table, maybe from Taiwan, and you could tell that they were not comfortable. Consulting with each other on every hand, but betting big at times, and smaller at others ($10 up to $100). The man had maybe thirty $25 chips and another thirty $5 chips, and he asked for change of $5 chips for four $25 chips, and the dealer refused, said he already had enough $5 chips. The dealer had plenty, it wasn't like he had to conserve them until he got a fill.

Then after a blackjack and the man had a 50 cent piece, he put it out to play for the dealer and the dealer openly mocked him, saying "wow, what a great tip", which of course the man didn't understand the sarcasm.

Had I had the time and felt like going through the hassle, I would have had a nice talk with the pit boss about how his dealer was acting.

I've also had other dealers make comments when people are winning, but not tipping at the Blackjack table. I generally won't tip until I leave, and then only if I'm ahead. I walked away about $150 ahead and left behind $10 for the dealer. Unless I win a big hand I generally won't tip while I'm playing.

Where were you playing? If I'm on a good run, I'll throw some to the dealer. When it dries up, so do the tips. The last time I was there, I usually left the table up a couple hundred, so I would throw $25 to the dealer. That was in addition to what I gave him during the game.

I've been there and witnessed the same thing, it's not right and the fact that someone from another culture has to endure a little player/dealer ignorance is not the worst part, it's that win loose or break-even a player has to answer as to why their home country is treating any player that way, DESPICABLE!!!

I understand where you are coming from, but when I travel I feel some obligation to study customs and potentially offensive or rude situations. I hate the excuse that people dont tip here because they dont have to at home.

before recession dealers were very practical and nice, in the recession they became a holes and the service went out the door.

as for the food at the buffets used to be above average, now its way below average.

I always leave the housekeepers a couple of bucks on the bed with a happy face. $2 means way more to them than you might think and I appreciate a nice clean room.

Agreed, and while they could use the $2, it is more than that. Even if just tipping a dollar, the person receiving sees that you appreciate what they do for you. Money is nice, but having others see the value in your assistance is almost more crucial to long term job satisfaction.

I went out to dinner here in town with some people from BraSil and in their country(braSil) they ad the tip on automaticity. So when the bill came they didn't tip.

We left the Resturant and I made the excuse to have to go back and get my phone so I could leave the tip. Dinner was 850, so I had to pull out 20%. I eat there s lot so can't stiff the people.

The government here mandates a minimum wage of $16.95 per hour for adult casual workers and tipping is not expected.

Obviously this changes when I travel internationally.

I read further and forgot about casinos. I only play dice. In a regular game, I tip by occasionally betting a $10 yo for the dealer. If I leave the table with what I consider a "score" I tip appropriately.

I personally always tip at a hotel. I know a lot of those housekeepers probably have very little and they have a tough job. My sister was in a similar situation many years ago, single with a child and a deadbeat father. Her life is wonderful now, but I will always remember how hard she worked at her three jobs to make ends meet.

I tip most service types, including maid service for hotels.

Restaurants get 20 percent but only AND only if the service is indeed "good service"

Carwash gets a couple bux.

Postman gets a couple nice gift cards a year.

UPS and others get a Lincoln if I see there's no visible damage to the shipping container, and of course, only if I am present...

I dont valet mostly but if I do, I will...[need the exercise]

Of course we must tip our Bartenders !

I always tip when we have food delivered but I don't tip when I pick up the food. Do others tip when they pick the food up?
