How far can a discussion go before it does more harm than good ?

I've had a few snipes thrown my way here... My tactic is to just not respond. Some part of me wants to 'fix' the situation but... In the end, it really doesn't matter what the other person thinks. Right or wrong, everyone has a right to their opinion and it's not my job to 'fix' it. Conversely, it's not their job to 'fix' me either. By not responding, they may walk away feeling a 'winner' and they can have it. It's a hollow victory that means nothing. The truth is bigger than you or I and finds its way to the surface without our 'help'...

That's a great approach Pat.

When someone "snipes" frequently they are trying to get a reaction - it's the whole purpose.

Some of the more immature types feel that is their way to "stir things up" and it's part of their game.

I hate game players......(well, I mean..not real games...you know)

I think that one of the inherent problems with any internet site is that when people post, there is no way to gauge their tone. What would pass as a funny or otherwise harmless comment in the real world can be construed in different ways when reading it. I've witnessed many debacles online that simply wouldn't have happened in face to face conversation, posted smilies notwithstanding.

As an administrator of one of the larger automotive Q&A websites, I have to applaud the mod team here for their patience and forbearing.

Been good, but plenty busy. Nothing wrong with that, of course, but it tends to burn up valuable TRF time, if you know what I mean!

I don't read any disrespect in this, but it's not an accurate conclusion. Speaking one's mind per se will not get anybody banned here. On the other hand, if the processes of the forum are being circumvented with negative results, the mods will step in to deal with the situation, and only move to penalties if the situation escalates.

The written word, without visual or auditory clues, can certainly lead to a misunderstanding, but in most cases should not lead to controversy. Criticism, on the other hand, be it constructive or mean spirited, is much easier to determine. Criticism is best served when an established relationship has been formed and boundries are known. Have no idea what I am really saying; just trying to sound like Gedanken (just kidding). IMHO, this site has clear guidelines, and long established relationships between members and most of the problems I have seen have come from newbies, which I am one, who had hidden agendas. I, for one, welcome spirited debates and well placed controversy.

A key point is to agree to disagree as well as question the point of view or arguement and not attack the person. This works well unless the person likes sheep.

That's not attacking, thats LOVE in it's most dyed in the wool form!

If someone made a JJ bobble head, I'd buy one to stick next to my watch winder.
