No WAY! The Sub will always be in class all by itself!

The new Explorer II's are the best modern day Rolex watches on the market, so I can see the high demand.
No block case, no gloss dial and gloss ceramic insert, no silly proportions between the case and braclet, the Explorer II is pretty much perfect.

Explorer 216570
While I do not see the Explorer 216570 series "replacing" the Sub, I do see how it has become a current favorite. The watch wears well, has the slightly larger size many of us want, and maintains a strong link with historic Rolex styling. I'm not surprised, but then again, I predicted it would be a huge success (back when others were less enthusiastic).

I can't see that happening. IMO, the Sub will always be THE watch for Rolex aside from the DJ's.

The sub isn't going anywhere, IMO.

The Sub is classic...I'd opt for the EXP II. More original and better looking IMO.

The Explorer is just not "Rolex" enough
1. Sub/DSSD 2. GMT 3. Daytona 4. Date Just 5. Yatch 6. Omega Seamaster 7. Explorer II, 42mm or otherwise Sorry, but I rather buy an Omega before an Explorer. Sub is king!

I think ignorant is more appropriate, or maybe less informed to be nice.

The Sub is the Sub. No arguing that. It is by all means the quinessential Rolex. James Bond wore one etc etc etc... No question.
HOWEVER, the Explorer should not be taken lightly. The case, size, coloring, and all the details are just 100% on this watch. Rolex definitely got this one right. I could see this watch being a hugely successful watch for Rolex. |

I just got an "old" polar explorer and it is just the business. Very much more stealth and subtle for everyday wear than any other larger sports watch. It is the quiet rolex.

Hi everyone, I'm new to the forum and have been a Ex II owner for about 2 years. I call it the it the "un-Rolex" Rolex. It's a subtle watch that doesn't draw much attention. That's one of it's charms in my humble opinion.

For the Explorer II to become the new Sub, it would have to be copied for years as the Sub has been copied.
The Sub has a certain understated, classic, rugged simplicity that is hard to match. To my eye, the Explorer II is bolder and, if anything, more sporty looking and casual that the Sub, which means it may appeal to a slighter smaller audience. That said, Rolex did a superb job with the Explorer II. The watch has all the features one could want and the case and bracelet are beautifully balanced, maybe more so than the new Sub-C. Still, in terms of the overall look, I can't imagine it supplanting the Submariner. Been wrong before though ... ;-) |
