Let's narrow it down to three; for dress either a Cartier tank on a black strap or a PP, for sport, either a Speedmaster Pro, or a Sub, and for a knock around watch, either a vintage Seiko diver or an AirKing. So, I gave six choices for three watches!!

Is this a "three watches" thread?

Here are three:
1) Longines Master Collection Automatic (semi-formal, dress, understated, must see in person)
2) Omega Speedmaster Professional (rad, conservative, timeless Chrono)
3) Tudor 9411 (versatile and stylish, cooler than a Rlx Sub???)

Here are ten (this is the collection I'm working on at least):
1) Rolex Sub 5513 or 1680
2) Rolex GMT 1675
3) Rolex Explorer I or DJ I
4) Rolex Explorer II
5) Tudor 9411 (black AND blue preferably)
6) Panerai 111
7) Zenith El Primero 36 000 vph
8) Breitling Navitimer
9) Omega Speedmaster Professional
10) Omega Seamaster 300

I'd throw a Doxa Sharky on there too... and a Marathon as a beater. Must have at least one Longines =)

Sub is a great staple for all around use. AP ROO is also a must have IMO. The Daytona I have tried on over the last few years and finally pulled the trigger last week, so I’m excited to see how I feel about that watch after I’ve owned it for a while.

SS: Sub/GMT/DSSD
Daytona (any color works)
Two-tone something, depending on your style, GMTIIC for me, DJ for many.
G-Shock or three.
Seiko Monster or better.
Marathon

Just my two-cents; for the value of it.

a day date is a must in any collection

whatever day date you want, any metal, but it is special in its own right and necessary in a collection IMO

4 - ss dj blue roman
5 - tt ym
6 - wg Daytona diamond pave blue roman

My 3 would be:

1. Rolex Sub for sport/dressy sport (versatile use)
2. Rolex Datejust or Omega Aqua Terra (alternatively vintage Omega or Tudor Oyster Prince from the 1960s) for wearing with a leather strap for formal wear and on NATO for casual wear.
3. Casio/Timex, etc. one that is light and can take whatever I throw at it no matter what. If it breaks... who cares? Get another and repeat.

My must-have's:

1) Gold Daytona (got it).
2) Gold DD (had one in the past. Will get one back in the future.)
3) Any beater watch (my Tissot chrono automatic is a good example - not super high end like a Rolex, but not cheap either; still looks nice for a non-Rolex and has a clear caseback, which I like.)
4) Any super cheap chinese-made watch with a all-mechanical movement. There is a Timex like this for $50 bucks (sometimes $20 on sale). Only reason to have this kind of watch is that it makes you appreciate high quality Swiss-made watches and it can be used as a "super-beater" - I mean, com'on, I'm not going to wear the Tissot if I'm going somewhere where I KNOW it's going to get beat up for sure (like during martial arts sparing or something like that); or if I know it's going to get super dirty - like working on my car.

Here's my take for now, but the current stage of the disease has me thinking sell all but the Calatrava to fund a Yellow Gold Daytona instead of SS EXPII.

My must haves from the age of 25 to 58, a Speedmaster Pro, and Submariner.

New must haves from 58 to present, Submariner 16610LV, and Daytona 116520 (black).

Inspite of owning five watches I remain a two watch guy.

ND Sub 2 liner
Daytona
Plexi Tudor Snowflake (takes care of vintage)
Still need a PP to complete collection

Steel sports rolex like the new explorer2 ,sub or gmt
Dress watch or if you are really the sporty type guy a milgauss or Daytona can be a dress watch too.depending on the budget can opt for gold models.
Another respectable watch brand like IWC pilot so you won't get tired of rolex all day.

Here would be the shortlist for my ideal collection:

Diver: Omega Planet Ocean cal. 8500/ AP Diver/ Blancpain Fifty Fathoms. For a vintage option, a Rolex 5513 or 1680

Ultimate All Rounder: GMT IIc / Explorer II 42mm

Chronograph: Omega Speedmaster Professional / Breitling Navitimer / Lange & Sohne Datograph/ AP ROO

Dress: Lange & Sohne Lange 1

Beater: Seiko Monster

Misc: JLC Memovox, vintage Omega Constellation Pie Pan, Omega Ploprof (to freak people out)

That's all that comes to mind at present, the list changes frequently
