Whatever is practical first and luxe second. If these two choices are not fully practical, I'd pass. Nothing s#$ks worse than a vehicle that doesn't run like a top.

Nothing worse in the auto industry than a 4x4 SUV trying to be a sports car. I don't get the Cayenne at all; it's slow, ugly, can't tow anything, and horrid gas mileage.
Only Porsche worth owning is a 911. |

Have you tried sitting in a Landrover Defender? I'm about the same height as you are, I'm 6'4" 220. Buying a Defender was my plan until I actually went and sat in one. Shoulder jammed against the B Pillar, leg stuck between the door and the steering wheel. And the seat didn't move back hardly at all. Doing long distances in that doesn't sound appealing. But they're just so awesome.

Does Toyota offer their biggest Tundra pickup over there? I am not sure of towing capability - but for their size they are pretty hefty! And I hate to admit it, but they are probably better built than the big American pickups.

Actually it's all true. They are slow, they do get horrible gas mileage (unless you get a diesel), and they are ugly - and basically a souped up VW Toureg.
Lot better options out there for same or less money. Resale on the Cayenne is very bad. |

Because it's resale is so bad I can get one for a pittance. Sure, it will be worth NOTHING by the time I'm finished with it but my plan would be to run it to death anyway. Oh, you're right, that ARE ugly...! But that actually doesn't bother me.

Picking one up pre-owned is absolutely the way to go. Guess that could be said for just about any car, but the Cayenne does depreciate quickly in the first 2-3 years. My buddy picked up a 3 year old Cayenne S for almost half of what it sold for new.

I have no idea what the market or availability of RHD is over there but I would suggest a US full size if you can find one and availability of support. My tow rating is 7800 US pounds (2004 F150 4x4) and I tow between 3,000US and 6,500US pounds (trailer / boat&trailer). I get about 14-15 MPG mixed city/highway and the newer ones are even better. I shudder to think MPG while towing 6500 pounds. I now have 176K practically trouble free miles (280K kliks) and do most of my own maintenance on my 2004 - that I am going to get around to trade in on a new F150 or Chevy Silverado soon.
The other thing to consider is the Tow rating new doesn't last forever without continuous work. If you are towing 3500 tonne (close to 8K pounds US) you may want to have some extra capacity so that you are not always at the limit, especially when used. If you folks drove on the right side of the road you would have more options. Good luck in your hunt.

And I agree the Cayenne isn't the best looking car in the world, but a Land Rover? The Defender is quite nice in a back to basics way, but ergonomics are a disaster. The Defender is fantastic off road but probably the worst car on road you can buy today. And then there are the reliability issues. The Discovery lacks the back to basics coolness the Defender has and apart from it's massive weight is not that bad apart from the fuel economy which must be worse than a Cayenne... Range Rovers are not my cup of tea at all, it's the only car I've ever driven that makes me seasick behind the wheel. I've not tried the new one yet, but I've heard it doesn't capsize on corners anymore, which is a good thing. Fuel consumption on a supercharged Range Rover must be one of the highest you can get in a car on the market today... As for depreciation: It's bad on a Cayenne, but the same is true for a Discovery or a Range Rover, at least where I live.

Oh, just because I have criticisms of the Cayenne, don't take that as me being a supporter of Land Rover.
No one should take it as an insult that I don't like the Cayenne - it's just my opinion and nothing more. Seems like the more appropriate vehicle for the OP would be a truck, if towing is going to be a primary use. For the record, I have a 2012 BMW X5 diesel and a 2011 Audi S4. I own the X5 because I have a family and need a larger vehicle for road trips and so forth. It's not the prettiest thing to look at either, but it's pretty good on gas mileage, comfortable, yet still feels nimble at autobahn speeds. My other option was an Audi Q7 diesel, but in the end I liked the X5 more overall. I looked at the Benz ML class as well, but couldn't stand the interior. I never even drove it. Land Rover models never entered the picture. |

Land Rover all the way if it is for genuine 4x4 requirments. The Porsche wouldn't pull you out of bed but it is by far the more comfortable. The defender will take you anywhere.
I would choose the land rover. Now, if all you needed it for is to drop the kids off at school where you might find yourself driving on a road with some puddles on it you could go with the Porsche. 3.5ton horse box. You'd eventually kill the car, unless of course, the horse is going to be pulling the cayanne |

Well I think if you can deal with the comfort level of the Defender, that's the way to go. Porsche is nice, but it's not quite my style. I like the no frills fun factor over the luxury sport ute. For what it's worth, I still plan on getting one, but I'll get a new smaller steering wheel and move the seat over and back just a bit so it's a bit more comfortable.
