Jim,

Let me add my best wishes to a speedy resolution to your job situation. Hang in there. And I have to add that this string should answer any questions about Rolex owners being a bunch on heartless, materialistic people. The members of this forum are incredible.

Jim,
Don't take the layoff personally. These types of bad things happen to good people who did nothing to deserve it except work hard and try to do a good job every day. Your career did not go down the tubes. You still have a license in a very hard skilled trade so the foundation is laid and no one can take that from you.

And I can tell you from 1st hand experience that it isn't just the housing market either. I make my living helping to develop laser products for the military and space based reconnaissance hardware at a fortune 100 company. A week ago our facility laid off 20% of our workforce because of lack of work

Within 3 hours, 100 people were axed, processed and shown the door.

I made it through...for now. We have a proposal out for bid on a classified project. If we don't get it, my job is all but done for.

I had been saving for a Rolex, like you, hadn't had one in a long time, also like you. I was holding off because my spider senses had told me something was going to go down at work and it wasn't gonna be good

When I made it, I splurged and you will splurge too. And you'll splurge faster and healthier because you won't be smoking. Quitting will be the most positive thing you can do right now to start turning things around.

For those of us who's been there, we feel the situation. I was off for 9 mos. and I remember watching "The African Queen" (The scene where Humphrey and Kate get stuck on the boat, and the audience is shown the "Big Picture" of just how limited our visions are. It inspired me to hang on and move forward. It turned out to be a far better move, than staying on with my former company.

Don't give up the hope!

IT field was hit hard during the last recession. I thought that between the downturn of the economy and off-shoring I was never going to find another job. Years later I am smiling at my paranoia. You will do too! Just hang in there. There is no way this country will allow the housing industry go down the crap shoot. Otherwise, all of us are pretty much done. No housing, no American Dream.

Rolex is only a watch. I am sure you'll find a job that will allow you to get a new one in no time. Also, this is a good opportunity for kids to learn that money does not grow on trees and that sometimes you have to suck things up and move on. Good luck to you and your family!

That is a terrible setback but if you have severance pay and unemployment that will help somewhat. I know it's little consolation but perhaps you can make a little $$$ on the side with your talents. I know I would personally love to have an electrician nearby to do work at reasonable prices - just something to think about.
Keep strong and keep coming here for reassurance. We're rooting for you.

When the going gets tough, the tough gets going. You'll do fine, you have many skills I'll bet. Oppurtunity always knocks for those who are prepared.

Good luck and hang in.

Jim, things might look bleak right now but try to look on the positive side. You're a journeyman skilled tradesman with marketable skills to offer. I know that it'll be an upheaval, but you'll come out of it OK.

Layoff is never a good thing for anyone, especially being committed to a company. Well, just take it easy and I'm sure you will find a better job. Been there, done that. Most of the time, changes will result in a better life.

Jim-

Tough but, I pray often to be able to look at challenges as opportunities. Opportunities to learn, grow, prove value and to become a better person. A mentor once told me that iron sharpens iron.... and to be forged, one must go through the fire and the heat...

Be strong and faithful my friend and all will be fine.

Think positive mate, you obviously have the love of a very special woman, who in bad times thinks of you and your "sickness".

Spend some quality time with kids. Forget the watch for while.

Print off some flyers, stick them in mail boxes, somebody may need a sparky for some general work. You never know, one door closes another opens up.

Jump on the boat over here, screaming for skilled workers

Good luck

PS: Ditch the ciggies!

Change is what it's all about. Thanks everyone!

I look at this as a positive. I have a whole life ahead. Thank you all for your words. As for my wife all I can say is I am one lucky guy. I forget to mention My 2 grand children, our 3 dogs and all my kids friends that make up our extended family. Thats why we have a Ford E350 extended Van. Again I cannot say enough about my wife. Her hearts pretty big. What she did for the 4 boys that live across from us for Christmas brought tears to my eyes. Thanks everyone; Jim

Hang in there, Jim. To some extent we are all experiencing the economic downturn in our country.

This is the time when we should look at what we have (family, friends, health, faith, skills) and count our blessings.

I was in your position 9 years ago, when after working for 12 years, I found myself without a job. The company I worked for was sold and moved to other state. All of a sudden 18 of us were without our jobs,
I started my own business and competed with the company that laid us off and ended up buying it back 3 years ago. The first 18 months were the toughest, but I was lucky to have a wife who supported me throughout, not just financially but mentally.

We are all pulling for your, Jim. You'll come out of this a better man!

You made it this far straight shootin', and all that you still have shows well. Don't let that which is out of your control deter you from doing the right thing. Dig deep, real deep for strength and you will push through this, one challenge at a time, one day at a time, one emotion at a time.

There's always light at the end of the tunnel. There are always ups and downs - you are currently on the down side... soon you'll get the upswing.

Sometimes things happen for a reason and the good Lord gives us these trials and tribulations. Don't fret.

Best,

Vernon

JIm, touched by the fact you took the time to tell us about it. God works in many ways and the bottom line here is you cannot keep a good man down.
The watch can wait, giving up the smoking cannot.
Keep us posted

The better part of my watch collecting are older Seiko automatics. I have had the fortune of owning several Rolexs in the past(a Pepsi Gmt and a 5513 Sub, both being very affordable at the time) but when the family started growing there values were put to better use. Sad part is my wife understanding my watch sickness for a non date Sub had just made a deal with me last week. Coming up on my 48 birthday in a few months she said I really ought to consider quiting smoking. Her deal to me was I take the money I spend on cigaretts every week and open a savings account to save for a new 14060. When I had enough money in the account I could buy it. The plus being I quit cigaretts. It would have been a long year but it would have been worth it. My wife is at work now we are lucky she has a good job but things will be tite. And it sure is a blow to the ego. Reading you guys post sure helps me smile. JJ and Jocke you 2 crack me up. East Bay Rider I love your avatar. Al your signature is great. Ed your avatar Sub add is one of the reasons for my love of watches I remember that add while I was growing up. Bo, Velitsko, Scott, Larry, C.J., Paul, Mike, Paulie, Allan, Jason, Dan, Padi56, Eddie, Karis, KansaiVet, Fraser, your all a great group of people. Sir I really like you Seiko 173. Vukota you have some nice Seiko's. Mailman Is T alive or.... I love the Sopranos. And last Pat you forum name says it all, Incurable. Thanks for listening everyone; Jim
Jim I am really sorry to hear that man. Construction is completely idling at this moment all abroad America, the situation is very delicate and I think we have but seen only the tip of the Iceberg... hopefully the president and the congress can work to aid the economy and put it back to one of the most dynamic in the world.
Jim, I hope you can get yourself another job soon. Have you thought about going solo?
