Not an indictment of Rolex per se, but Daytona hype has definitely died down. But I think it was smart of the AD to put it in the window - it got your attention and now a couple of hundred more people out there know about the inventory of this AD...

Exactly! I've never understood why an A.D. would keep such a watch off display if it's not already got a customer's name on it. |

Just a shame it has to gather dust in the window and not flipped for a profit

The Daytona hype thing is rubbish plain and simple.
If they are so rare please explain to me why Blowers/Watchclub/Watchcentre/Watchfinder/Iconic get a new one every month or so dated the previous month? Oh and guess what? They're charging up to £750 over the RRP. How strange? My guess is they offer AD's £250 over the RRP and then sell them for about £500 profit. I don't buy it. I'm glad the Daytona doesn't appeal to me, otherwise the strain you have to go through to get one would leave a very sour taste in my mouth. |

When I bought my Air King from Watches of Switzerland a couple of months ago the sales lady told me that they'd had an excellent Christmas period and that Rolexes were selling well. The anticipated price increase was encouraging some to take the plunge admittedly, but for others there were no external pressures. The brand is still selling itself.

I can understand your point of view but to be honest a few years ago I was on an AD waiting list for nearly three years for mine and when I finally got that call I was SO excited! I know just walking in and buying what you want, when you want is great but in this day and age it is sometimes nice to NOT be able to. All the best.

I view the window photo as more as timing. I tried on a BNLR and the next week it was gone. I wanted to try on a Plat Daytona but it was being privately shown. The next day it was gone. The AD also had a WG Sub and when I finally made up my mind to but, it was gone. I think the reordering is sometimes not immediate. On the other hand, the WG Sub I tried on near Fort Myers was a very early V serial and looked like it had been re-stickered for price.

Today's photo – now minus the steel Daytona! I do love my Daytona, but my GMT IIc has been the watch I have one most ever since I bought it. After that, my 16600 Sea-Dweller 4000 has had the most wrist time. The idea behind buying the GMT, however, was to give my Sea-Dweller and Datejust a bit of rest from the daily rotation. |

I was in Tourneau at the Westchester Mall last week and they had a pre-owned D serial SS Daytona in the display of pre-owned pieces. They are asking $14,995! Is the hype dead? Well if Tourneau can ask that for it, and eventually get it, I guess not. Or maybe Barnum was right.

I thought the Daytona hype was over...maybe not in some markets?? I remember quite a few years ago walking into our local AD and asking about the Daytona and being told they will only sell it to someone who buys a DD as well. I guess that was their way of telling me I wasn't a valued customer..."hey, tell you what....buy this $40k watch and we'll throw in this stainless steel thing for $10k"

Every AD that I have been in where I know someone has always told me "we have a SS Daytona in the safe if you want one" I don't think that they are buying and selling themselves, as that would be a big risk. But holding to sell to their good customers, some of whom may be grey market dealers, absolutely. And when only a privileged few can buy new from an AD the grey market runs wild. I have never had the desire for one so I have never bought if away from someone who may want it, but could have many times to make money selling BNIB used. Just don't see the need for me to profit on selling watches, I am in the insurance business for a living.

I must admit, I was slightly lucky to get my Daytona. I didn't really have a relationship with the AD in question at the time, but I went in to look at a DeepSea one day, made a throwaway remark about wanting a Daytona and they said they would quite happily take my name and should be able to help me…six months later, I got a phone call. Helping me with the Daytona certainly worked out for them, as I went on to buy another three Rolexes from them after that! I would also intend to buy any future Rolexes from them. Perhaps dealers should think of using a Daytona to attract future custom, rather than simply reserving it for those from whom they have already made some profit. |

i also had a missed call from laings edinburgh the day before which was due to me putting my name down for a blnr and on the phone asked if they would discount and it would save me the trip if they dont and they said no either! did they not have the gmt on the window or it was probably upstairs in their showroom |

Laings in Glasgow seem to have most models in stock also in their window display (bar the daytona)
always seem to have the best display on any AD Having said that after buy my SD from them in 2005 - I've never darkened their door since due to sales service but thats another story |

silly minions.....
the daytona hype may have died down BUT all that means is that its only more readily available. its still a 'sought' after watch and commands MSRP and in some places more than MSRP... "rolex manufactured the hype by controlling/limiting SS daytona production" they sure did i hope you minions are prepared for the SS daytona ceramic 'fabricated' hype rolex did it before and they will do it again and when they do the 'current' daytona will still be commanding premium $$$ because the new SS ceramics when they arrive will EASILY exceed the $15000 us dollar range and with Rolex playing the same game all over again? they will command $17000 PLUS book it |
