After reading the posts, I believe the reason that the DD is known as an "old man's watch" is because it takes a lifetime of saving to afford one!

I love my DD - bought it last December. It is extremely well finished. I hadn't realised, before I bought it, that the crystal is convex, as opposed to the totally flat crystal on my Date Just bought last September.

Certainly a watch for occasions, but I tend to wear mine most days.

For those that aspire to one - get saving, it's worth it when you walk out of the ADs with one on your wrist!!

I want a high-end dress watch for my 40th or 50th birthday in 5 or 15 years respectively. I am torn between a DD (18238/118238/118235) and this PP Calatrava (the 5127R in Rose Gold):

While we are on the DD topic; what is the difference between the 18038 and 18238 besides the quickset?

Screw the sport watches, if I could have only one watch, the Day-Date is it.
I love my sub and DJ, but next to my DD, "they ain't nothing"!!!

As sport watches go, the all gold blue submariner is sweet, not the most practical, but sweet.

I have five beautiful watches: A Patek Philippe Aquanaut, a SS Daytona, a Rolesor YM with MOP dial and diamond and sapphire markers, a Panerai Luminor Marina, and, of course, the YG DD with white face and sticks. The watch that gets all of the attention, the one that everyone recognizes, the timepiece that commands the respect of vendors and waiters and service people as well as bank presidents and politicians, is the President. It is not just the iconic Rolex, it is the ulitmate iconic watch.

For an old man? Yea, and a young man, too. But really - only for a successful and victorious man. I'm proud to wear one.

I would love to buy a new sub, I don't wear my old 5513 sub anymore, mainly because I hate to take off the DD. As far as "old man's watch", I'm older than most here but there are plenty of young guys wearing a DD as mentioned in the other posts. That was more the case years ago.

Like this?...I'm turning 50 later this year so I started celebrating already. It's 5127R (it's a subtle rose gold compared to rolex rose gold)

One of the reason I asked is I saw this for under $5000, and thought that would be a great way to get into a day/date for a good price. I know little about them, any insight would be apprecaited.

Yeah; we older guys can barely find the Internet; much less type; especially with these new fangled Apple computers and their complicated keyboards. In fact, I can barely type more than four words at a time because the heavy gold on my arm wears me out. I have to rest.

I remember when I was a young man. All I wanted was the feel of steel on my arm. I felt so tough in those days; and with all that steel on my arm, I was a formidable force. Now, I am toting gold and afraid to move because I might scratch my delicate Day-Date or Daytonas.

Even if I am not really old yet, I am getting there; so there must be more gold and fewer posts waiting for me in my golden years.

Just kidding.

I started wanting a YG Day-Date when I was in my mid thirties. It took a while to get one.

Even those who say they will only wear it occasionally must be warned. When you get a Day-Date, especially the newer line, it is likely you will find it dominating your wrist time because in reality it is a beautiful, heavy, and tough watch. There's a real reason why it's such an iconic watch. Once you wear one for a while, it will become apparent to you.

An older guy's watch collection...

i think the key is to buy preowned about 5 yrs-10 yrs. old, double quick set, and something PRETTY like lardog has. I'm an 'old man' but at 30 I would've loved one on my wrist, as I am certain many 30 yr. olds on this Forum would agree.....'old man' watch my ass!

a day/date is a fantastic watch, unless of course, you do something like this:

http://baltimore.craigslist.org/jwl/595831174.html(assuming this 'beauty' is even real)

best,
dan

I am by no means an expert on these DD's but that ones bracelet looks like it has quite a bit of streach even in that picture.A new President bracelet will set you back a good bit more than the price they are asking for the watch.
I think a good used range for them is at least 9K and more than likely the 12-15k range for a nice tight newer model.IMHO 5K limit is better spent on higher condition Sub or just put it in the GLD (gold ETF) and it will get to that 15k range in time.

I am an "Old Fart" (72)~ and I love my DD, purchased a few months ago just like the picture Bo shows on the forum. I can't decide if I love my Air Conditioned New Holland Tractor as much as much DD. I give my Z series GMT II SS more wrist time. The DD just goes round and round in the winder! Special occasions at my age come only now and than.Sorta like sex. You young studs stay cool your time will come!! Bill

It really depends on two major things: model and bracelet. That 1803 is a classic, with plastic (acr) crystal, but bracelet shows some stretch. A nice condition 1803 can fetch up to 10 grand easily. If you want to get your hands into the DD vintage craze; try one on a strap; they look awsome and you can save big money.

As far as the model; it is up to you. Which way do I go? Manufacture dates more than models. Dad's present: a DD mfd in the year I was born. My first DD: when my daughter was born. My second DD: mfd also on the year I was born.

Some people go for the model (1803, 18038, 18238, etc.) and some for 'dates', and some just for the look and feel. Either way, it is a FANTASTIC watch!

I agree with Otto. We old geezers who own DDs don't tend to post very much.

<-----------

I got mine after seeing one on a friend's wrist. I loved the look of it so much that when the same one became available, I snapped it up. It's a beautiful dress watch and also goes great with jeans.

ive learned that to get the best discounts, you have to wear your most expensive watch when you are shopping; only then do the AD's take you seriously....

I dont consider myself an old man at age 56 and I love my new DD in YG.

It is a very elegant watch. My GMT ll c isnt elegant but works well for everyday use.

When my wife and I go out, go cruising or attend a business function I wear the DD.

IMO nothing else quite has the same mystique.

Man, I'm really eating my foot on this one. What I said kind of cam out all wrong, so let me see if I can explain it better.

The kind of guys I see wearing DDs don't seem the type to post on internet forums much. Not because they don't know how or anything, they just aren't into it. They're the type of guys that don't wear flahy Italian suits, but rather more conservative English suits. The type of suit that doesn't jump out to the average bystander, but yet gives off a kind of "quiet cool".

Or, even if they are just wearing shorts and a polo shirt, the fit and finish of those shorts and shirt tell you that it is not your average store bought shirt, bought something that came from a taylor.

They are the type of guys that drive a nice Mercedes, or even Bently or RR, when they could be more flashy with a Ferrari or Lambo, but they just don't care.

I guess to sum it up, the kind of guys that I have seen wearing DDs are the kind that appreciate luxury for what it does for THEM, not how it looks. They don't care about other atches, and movements, and holograms or LECs or CRBs. They just want the best of the best for their own interests.

Now, I'm not saying that us WISs are bad, or that we are trying to impress anyone. Honestly, I really don't know how else to explain it other than the guys I've seen with DDs are generally very wealthy, cool, and keep to themselves. They don't seem to be the type to join internet forums. Cool?
