Before the Cuban revolution my Dad always had Ron Matusalem in the cabinet and now it's moved to the Dominican Republic...

My favorite sipping rums:
Flor de Cana 7yr Flor de Cana 12yr (personal favorite) Flor de Cana 18yr Mount Gay Extra Old Mount Gay 1703 Plantation XO El Dorado special reserve 15yr I would be happy to sip on any of the above in good company. If sipping rum is not what you are into and rum and coke is more appealing, then check out Gosling's Black Seal, Myer's Dark, or Captain Morgan Private Stock... all of which make a fine rum and coke. |

The last rum I had tasted like a single malt Scotch whisky. Oh wait. It was a single malt.
I am not a rum drinker. I know I have a couple of bottles in my liquor cabinet, but that' mostly for my wife's cooking.

You have fine taste my friend. You ever try middleton whiskey (my all time fav whiskey)? Pairs nicely with a fine cigar!

Since you sound like an aficionado I am most certainly barking up the wrong tree. However, I am always vocal about things I enjoy and encourage you to try this. I am sure you like your whiskey/bourbon/scotch neat (maybe a little branch?) but if you are ever in a place where you just want to enjoy a nice mixed drink... do yourself one favor and as gross as it might sound try ordering a jameson and pineapple juice. I have recommended this drink to many who have laughed at first, but thanked me later. It is the ultimate palate cleanser and all around enjoyable summer cocktail... try it.

Yuck! Only like this for impressing girls with flames. Devils springs does a better job of that, however. Otherwise pure gasoline....

Oh - I also want to suggest trying something my father used to make when I was just a teen. Still make them once and a while and love them!!!
Easy - Put coconut rum in a coffee mug, microwave to decently hot, and throw in a cinnamon stick. Heart warming drink, literally.

Oh boy I found a thread that's got my attention!
I've been drinking Appleton 21yr for about 7 or 8 years now, such an amazingly complex yet smooth rum. Last year I had the opportunity to tour the plantation and went specifically to buy their 50 yr reserve bottle. At $5,000 for the bottle I settled on a bottle of the Estate Edition (supposedly only sold at the factory) instead. I've got to say if you get the chance to try some of it, go for it! I almost can't go back to the 21yr one anymore. The Estate Edition is a minimum 18yo single malt rum. A little different since they claim its not blended with other rums. Looking forward to trying some of the others listed here as well. |
