i think this question is unanswerable because its the wrong question.....i got my first rolex 30 yrs ago, but only started collecting and educating myself about watches and horology a few years ago. i think we're not making the right comparison....when i ask myself 'what are my rolex's to me, its different than the answer i get when i ask about my omegas... My first rolex is commemorative a landmark in accomplishment....but i won't go on about the virtues of rolex here....dont need to preach to the converted....however i think omegaphiles are a bit introverted through self preservation not this board....but obviously not me....

Asking whether rolex or omega is better is like asking are apples or pears better....

i have been in competitive swimming for 50 yrs (christ...) omega is the name on the pressure pad timing the worlds most important swimming events (what a noob phelps...best swimmer ever but spent too much time doing drills when other people were learning character lessons, pa leeez, bong man promoting omega)....ive never seen rolex on anything that required science or accuracy...tennis? equestrian sport?....no rolex set out to be status omega set out to be innovative...(love my mil gauss for the back story....2 gauss....what omega! 15000 gauss) .if you ask 'which is more innovative., rolex or omega?', which will be the best all around timepiece in the future?', 'which will attract new consumers the most?', 'which watch brings you the most of all value categories as one goes through all of life's activities?'.....quirky, iconic (ploprof, bullhead....er nothing rolex)i think its omega. If you ask the real question 'which has more status?', its rolex....but then rolex is the rolls royce of watches....rolls is rich grandpa's car.....rolex is rich grandpa's watch to the mass of the uneducated....omega on the other hand is a drivers' watch.(hang on dssd fans...are you really going 12 k down....not without your head caving in....at some point its stupid)....a better comparison is bmw/porche to mercedes......omega to rolex.....well if its performance your talking about, bmw/porsche if its comfy-leather-heavy milf attractor its a rolex/mercedes....

but must be taken in perspective, I'm 63 semi retired professional, drive a f350 and nissan 370zx and surf big waves and flyfish.....im a 30 yr old trapped in a old school body....each to our preferences...
wow. I dig it..... I think. you like your omegas, and your Rolexes, but are
conflicted due to aging, suppressed/repressed feelings of anger because you really love Omega, but think you should really love Rolex, and you do in certain ways, and in certain ways, you think the comparison is ridiculous but you do it anyway, because after all, life is well just life, and the Buddha, after all just sits, and sits and sits.

You seem to be comparing advertising campaigns, not wristwatches.

Both great watches, both are marketing monsters, while I dont like everything Rolex represents I am glad that they dont spend as much putting movie stars as brand ambassadors as Omega. From my data set of 1 I have a 1960's Omega De Ville which was a great uncles (no not one of those threads) took it to Omega's Sydney Service centre, they claimed the swiss told them it was too old to service, I dont expect Rolex would tell me the same thing.

interesting (some) answers....over on another forum the same question was asked, much more succinctly i must add, and theres a great discussion re the merits and shortcomings of each, (much like i have experienced in my tenure in academia.....), 12 pages worth of point by point discussion. i posted this original thread to learn about watches, not to mark 'territory'.....i apologize if i didn't present the question in the proper format, didn't respect our more venerated members opinions appropriately and i will think twice before i post a question or an opinion in the future. i am a neophyte to horology and watch collection and i appreciate your tolerance of that. I assumed because i have owned a rolex for 30 yrs and have 4 others, i was entitled to 'muse' in a non confrontational environment about my new hobby.....lesson learned.

When asked succinctly, the Rolex vs. Omega question has resulted in good discussions here too. When you mock DSSD owners because they won't dive that deep, claim that Rolex isn't involved in anything requiring science or accuracy, throw in the "rich grandpa" cliche, and take shots at Michael Phelps/tennis/equestrian in the same post, that's not a good foundation for a quality watch discussion and I think you knew that.

All that time in academia made you grow fond of ellipsis points and weary of capital letters, I see.

Exactly. I just don't interpret much of your post as non-confrontational. Someone who has owned 1,000 Rolexes for 80 years has no more right to post on this forum than a newbie that doesn't own a watch yet -- as with much of life, it's all about the tone. Saying you have to "think twice" before posting a "question or an opinion" is an insult to the forum.

Wow - Crazy thread.... I didn't see any trolling here.

But I do find many rolex owners a little too defensive -

Almost trying to protect a fragile psyche

no the sun doesn't rise and set on your wrist.

It's healthy to admit to the fact that we spend because we have a passion, and not feel the need to defend that.

My current score is Omega 13, Rolex 8 -

I love them both, but am under no illusion of the fact that they both serve up tasty kool-aid...

you can't honestly believe that Rolex does not pay for Brand ambassadors/product placement and a ton of advertising...

But overall... the only impression I get from many of the responses to this thread is..."wow...a lot of people out there are wearing their Penises on their wrists"

At the rate responses are pushing Peoples' Buttons...I see this thread getting locked. Everyone is entitled to their thoughts, preferences and opinions but antagonizing and alienating others is not the best way to resolve "differences in opinions." Especially since there is no one right answer there will never be agreement.....

Is it ok if I prefer Blancpain and IWC?

Is it ok if I think Blancpain's movement is superior to Rolex's, even though
I'm not a watchmaker and really know nothing about movements?......
but that watchmakers tell me Blancpain's manufacture movements are superior in every way to Rolex movements?

Is it ok if I like IWC more than Rolex even though IWC generally uses an in-house, modified, Valjoux 7750 movement?

Hell, I like the IWC DIAL! Damnit!

So there you have it, this thread may just be the bling leading the blind!
Be Well out there ........

Its interesting this rabid justification is always someone trying to talk their Omega into a Rolex. I have rarely if ever seen it the other way around.

The only thing I'll say is my respect for the Omega brand has grown by leaps and bounds over the last 2-3 years. They are really getting their act together.

The fact that Rolex has used in house movements and Omega hasn't until recently kept me away from Omega. I do enjoy Omega as a brand and am planning to add a new PO to the collection at some point.

Omega equipment times the Olympics. But it is not mechanical watches. It is all electronic. AND high-speed motion photography, electronic start systems and much more than we can imagine.

Rolex and Omega are nice. Neither are what I call elite.

The history and innovations of Omega is every bit as interesting as Rolex. I had a Seamaster Deville and a Speedmaster in the past and liked them a lot. However I don't see myself getting another Omega in near future, particularly Seamaster and PO primarily because of PO size and Seamaster dated design. But I must admit, they are becoming the new Rolex.

Clearly marketing dollars work...the fact that anyone would think there is a correlation between being the brand timing an event and their wristwatches is hilarious.

Well history teaches us tha Rolex only over came Omega in the last 50 years.
As far as timing sporting events. There have been many in the past.
Seiko. Heuer. Omega. Rolex all come to mind and I know I have left some other Swiss brands off the list. Hell I bet Timex has even been used at an event in the past.
A lot of that has to do with ponying up the money.

yes, the lack of caps and other functions arose from the fact that i spilled some wine on my keyboard one day and the left shift key quit working....since then its been a habit....and presenting ideas in the form of a refereed paper with an abstract is not what i do in my 'fun' time....

ps....advil helps too...

:)
i do enjoy this forum though.....
thanks all

You are right, omega makes some innovative time pieces(like your example of the swimming pieces). Only problem is they are too damn hard to fit on the wrist..

Both Rolex and Omega are mid-luxury brands, the Mercedes and BMW of watches if you will.

Totally agree.

The secondary market on Omegas is poor. They are nice watches but...

Rolex usually keeps it's value and in many cases increases.

The Rolls Royce comparison would go to PP or AP

i agree with the resale point on rolex....id hate to be in the business of flipping omega's...except maybe speedy's......but i wonder if the cost differential makes up the diminished resale? Maybe it levels out at about 5 yrs.....i just find that the omega's get more wrist time than the rolex's primarily because I'm a bit enamoured with them currently and the ones i have are > 40mm which i like.
