Well, since it's the mega capital of Rolex, it's an incredibly competitive environment to sell in. Why wouldn't he sell on eBay?
If the watch is a good genuine item, would you sell it on Ebay with their 10% commission, Paypals 3% commission and the risk of lost in postage? HK has a market for Rolex, any Tom Dick and Harry has one, so why would you sell it on Ebay?

HK has a huge supply of used Rolexes, even though the demand is also high. If you want a large potential customer base and a quick sale, eBay ís a solid option.

I don't think the OP would've found this watch on an independent HK watch seller's site. More potential customers = higher price. 10+% can be worth it easily.

EBay is a great outlet used my many companies to sell in a world wide market. Yes there are also scammers but there are plenty outside of eBay as well. I suspect there are even some on the forum. Just because it's eBay doesn't mean it's crap.

I am not saying Ebay items are crap; just be careful.
The seller is asking £1360 for a Rolex with 95% feedback, There is no logic to it, giving up 13% in commission. if the watch is worth £1360 the seller can easily get this or a better price selling in HK.
People in HK spending £1360 on a Rolex is nothing to them; and the market from China as well.

The watch market in Hong Kong is one of the biggest in the world. With the amount of trade and capital going in and out of the city, everyone wants the latest and greatest. It's the same case with watches. People buy a new model then trade it for next year's "upgraded" model, etc. Thus there is a surplus of "used" and "preowned" watches. If I was a watch dealer, I'd try to move the "used" inventory to get liquidity for new inventory.

The mega rich mainland and HK Chinese may change and upgrade but there are many young HK people who cannot afford a new Rolex and would buy second hand just to get on to the luxury market and be in the in crowd. Unlike the UK and many other countries where most people are not into watches and would think twice before buying a second hand Rolex as they cannot justify spending thousands on a time piece. In my opinion the market for second hand Rolex would be much greater in HK than sell on Ebay. The only reason for someone to sell on Ebay is to remain anomalous and with a feedback of 95%, steer clear.

My "issue" would be that this particular seller has had a good record of getting stuff into the US of A. And, given the rarity [surprisingly] of this particular item, it might be worth the challenge. What the hell!
Regardless of the seller's "record of getting stuff into the US of A," the practice is illegal and unethical.

I would think that given your stated occupation that ethics would have some bearing on your behavior, even if the law doesn't.

I'm not arguing with you Grady, but why 'unethical'?

X2 It's technically illegal, but that has absolutely nothing to do with ethics imho.
