May I see your ID?

The AD's near me have pretty much all been robbed within the past couple of years. All doors are locked and you have to be buzzed in and out.
If the AD's used a license policy instead I would probably oblige. I don't really see the big deal. How could they not give me my ID back?
Maybe they were just trying to see if you had your wallet with you to gauge if you were a buyer?
Why didn't you just ask why they needed it?

for 31 years i wore a gmt rootbeer 167533 into several ad's, wearing something short sleeved, where the watch could be seen.

"dressed for the office", jacket/long sleeved shirt, watch visible?

if they don't think you're a player & you want to see something expensive, they'll act accordingly.

Are we suprised Jared acts like this. . . I'm not. It wouldn't suprise me if they took your ID and scanned it so they would have your information to solicit you in the future or sell it to someone else to solicit you. I refuse to buy gas or anything at Sheetz since they insist on scanning your ID and keeping your info when you buy beer/tobacco (the law says if you look under 35 they check your age, not retain all your info/purchasing habits indefinately).

I'd rather get buzzed in and/or have armed guards present.

Jared is a national chain owned by Signet Jewelry out of Bermuda, via another holding company, and I think they also own Kay's jewelers, a more down-market jeweler. It looks like they own different tiered stores to appeal to different demographics. Smart marketing, medicare jewelry.

While I wouldn't want to hand over my ID on general principle, I do understand why they might want it. The ADs near me just buzz you in. No ID.

Exactly. I can't tell the difference between Jared and the other mall stores. Bunch of lower-end jewelery I wouldn't buy my wife. I wouldn't go as far as calling it medicare jewelery that would be REALLY bad.

Yep, I know the sign you guys are talking about and those stores do not get my business either. One a related note, I will never set foot in a Target store again because of a similar thing recently. Anyway, I've never been asked for an ID in a jewelry / watch store either and would have probably done the same thing as the OP.

I suspect he meant mediocre jewelry; perhaps the spell-checker kicked in.

Mall chains like Kay's and Jared don't really sell jewelry, they sell money. The merchandise is just a way to push high-interest financing on people who really cannot afford it...

I see where you're coming from being offended but playing devils advocate, what if some random person on the street came up to you and asked to try on your day date? What if you went to a bank and asked to quickly hold $25,000? They'd laugh you out the door...

Most ADs in the DC area display placards in their cases that it's their insurers policy to only show one watch at a time, so the ID rule doesn't seem to far fetched. Then again, they have all broken this rule in front of me.

One AD handed me an Aquanaut to try on and then told me he'd be right back and walked into the back...

Your beliefs are your beliefs but I have to ask what was so insulting? What do you think the salesperson was going to do with your ID which most likely would have never left your site.

I have been asked a few times and honestly never even thought twice about it, then again I was there to buy not shop. They are dealing with $10k-??? watches and could you imagine how many times a day someone walks in who simply wants to try on a Rolex and take a pic for a web site.

These are also stores that are in malls and lack security to lock you in.

If they ask everyone for an ID regardless of how you are dressed they are doing the right thing. Would you rather they pick and choose who they ask for an ID?

To each his own but I wouldn't let it ruin my day especially if you have the means to be Rolex shopping. Buy where you feel comfortable.

There has been several high profile robberies of Rolex AD's, several in San Diego in the last year or two, sounds like asking for ID is becoming a more common practice. Personally, I think its ineffective, an armed robber doesn't care about being asked for an ID, they just stick their pistol in your FACE and tell you what to do. It must be to deter the kind of thief that asks to see a piece and then bolts for the door with it. Still, doesn't seem all that effective to me.

As to taking offense, I don't understand that reaction, its your right to refuse and leave, and that's perfectly fine by me.

he's probably making enough $$ on the part-time gig that he manipulates his schedule for off-time availability.

Our AD was knocked over twice I believe, so I do not blame them for whatever measures they take. I know the owners, it is a small business, and they can't afford frequent robberies.

A Royal Maui by me requires photo ID when trying on watches. Not a big deal to me although I was surprised the first time.

At our Porsche Centre, our policy is to ask for a driver's license when performing a demonstration drive. This is to make sure the test driver has a valid license and verify who we are working with. A photocopy is made and the license is returned right away. I believe we handle this in a very professional way and never have had anyone decline to show their ID. Different setting than a watch boutique of course but I think it is all in the delivery.

They got my number and invited me for grand opening at South Coast, I excitedly rejected it :D

I think I may have been to the store in question and they let me try on the DD without giving an id. Is it in the open mall outlet stores in Manchester, which is next to Nashua?

Kind of funny story but I was interested in a DJ they had and asked they sales guy if the watches were certified and serviced by rolex, which he told me they were. This was a mid 9Os 16234 and when I asked if it was all original he said it was better than original because the crystal was an 'upgraded sapphire crystal which was better than the plastic crystal the watch ame with when new..' And when I asked to see the rolex paperwork for the service he pulled it out of the safe and it was not serviced by rolex, but some random Jeweler...I did not buy the watch :)

a local ad by me has the license policy. to be fair, it isnt in the best part of town and its sort of close to detroit. BUT with all that said, i have never had to show my license. i like to think its because of my boyish good looks and stunning personality.. lol j/k i usually ask for a specific model and then it goes from there.
