There has been some excessive hype surrounding the Daytona though like the obsequious drooling drivel posted in a well known blog. Claims of 5 year waiting lists and the near impossibility of obtaining one! I think that every AD I have been to in the last few years has them off the shelf as do most of the larger second hand dealers.
My local AD doesn't keep the SS on the shelf. It has to be asked for and they won't sell to a new customer off the street.

Maybe they are behind the times. But I'm thinking the watch still has an aura to it that will never quite go away.

Depends on where you are. No wait list where I am on the west coast. I can easily get a white or black from multiple AD's tomorrow

That said, after owning a black then white then black, I currently own none. Nice watch but I found it was not for me.

In many cases, people who say the Daytona is overhyped and overpriced will not blink to pay 15k on a sub with one word of red text on the dial (and no glidelock! Hehe). To each their own, the daytona has a cult following for a reason.

I don't think the hype is the watch's fault. Rolex has had a very exclusivity driven strategy with releasing this and thus as so many have not seen the watch for real but only on large internet pics then it is inevitable that this watch will suffer from over-expectation and hype.

Am I correct in saying though that only the SS models have historically been the ones difficult to obtain?? Almost every AD I have ever been in has had a WG/RG/YG model or TT

It's a lovely watch and worth it. But it's not a two year wait. A couple are almost always available in the classifieds here, for example, including brand new ones as well as lightly used ones.

Way overhyped, costs only around 12K, worn by best race drivers, politicians, actors, boxers, movies stars, many respectable members of our forum.

It's freaking amazing and I'm lucky to own it.

I think the Daytona is the pinnacle of the stainless steel Rolex world.
