Do you bring your Rolex with you when you travel?

Japan is very safe. Regarding other places in the world, I would evaluate the situation on a case by case basis.

I just returned from Montreal, Quebec and had no issues.

I have a GMT 11 and my wife has a Datejust - both insured. We just returned from Europe (Italy & Austria). We wore them, and had no problems or issues. Why have a GMT and leave it at home when traveling?

Why the heck would you even own the watch if you are not going to wear it. I must be missing something. By the way I just returned from a week in France and no one paid the least bit of attention to my SS GMTII.

One on the wrist and that's it. I don't like to worry about losing it or wording over it while it's in a bag of hotel safe

If it is fully insured then take it. Memories made on holiday and adventures increase the value of the watch to me. I generally just take along one that I can wear for all parts of the trip. Normally the sub no date.

If you've never been mugged, good for you, but in a place like New Orleans, there is hardly a day goes by that some tourist isn't relieved of his Rolex and all too often a lot more, up to and including his life.

Its not so much the safety of the location as how familiar you personally are with it - someone who lived in South Africa or Nigeria all their life would know where to go and not to go with their Rolex for example..

Im sure a Japanese person would be just as worried, if not more, about safety if they travelled to America

In my time as an expat in Japan, I've known Japan to be mostly a very safe place with generally low crime levels. Like any other city, Tokyo had its areas that were (and probably still are) best avoided alone or at certain times of night.

In general, when travelling outside the US, the approach that's worked well for me is to be respectful of local customs, practices, habits, especially local safety/security considerations, and awareness of the environment in which I expect to be. I'd definitely research what the "locals" consider appropriate.

In deciding whether or not to wear expensive jewelry and watches while vacationing, my approach is to err on the side of not attracting too much unwanted (negative) attention (for me that is nothing shiny, blingy, loud, etc). Even if the jewelry / watch is insured, I'm sure the process of being made to part with it is far from pleasant, will detract from your vacation experience or worse. Secondly, you generally don't want to tempt hotel staff to make their fingers sticky.

I returned today from an international trip on which I chose not to take my BLNR (insured), since even the locals there don't wear "real" stuff while walking around or on public transport. I elected to wear my Speedy (as a happy medium; also insured). Transiting through London Heathrow, for the first time ever in all my travels, I was asked to take off my Speedy which caught me a bit by surprise (and I was too groggy after a long flight to stick it in my hand-bag). As long as that minute felt before I was reunited with my watch, I can only imagine what it'd have felt like with the BLNR.

I went back and checked my trusty reference source of homicide rates, and you are 40 times less likely to be killed in Japan than Canada....... so if you risk it at home hang lose and enjoy Japan. 180M people and 11 homicides..... only 11000 less than the USA......

That said I wear mine to the US and Japan but agree there are some parts of the world that are a risk..... Japan certainly not one of them, your bigger risk is coming home with a new Rolex, lots of members on here and the Yen like the Canuk dollar are both soft vs US$.
