The New Day-Date 40

Sorry OP don't agree with your conclusion at all. The 36mm is THE day date, the icon, the flagship, the "president" if you will and always will be. The larger versions are simply that, larger versions of the original. I saw the platinum and the rose gold in person yesterday at an AD. They do look nicer than the DD2 but they are still too large for this type of watch. Platinum looked better as it lacks the fluted bezel which I felt was too "much" on the rose gold. However the 36mm still blows it out of the water IMHO.

Thanks for sharing the pictures and taking the time to do a write up.

Can't wait to see more dial combinations in stores as time goes by. Really liking the DD 40.

The 40MM Daydate is available for sale in Vancouver at my favorite Rolex dealer. The salesman who showed it to me was wearing his own personal 36MM YG Daydate so the difference was immediately obvious . IMO, the 36MM has a more refined and less in your face look, while the 40MM leaps off the wrist. All in all, I wouldn't kick either one out of bed.

Great write up! Thank you for sharing! Nice piece indeed, but I would not trade my RG DD2 for the 40mm version. I for one think the 41mm size is awesome, and looks great on the wrist...has major presence and feel. The 36mm is just too diminutive in my opinion. But, as mentioned here before, to each his own! I do wish they had made the new movement for the 41mm...

36mm is still the daddy. Nice larger option though and a new movement is always a good thing.

Hi Folks, I was in Newcastle UK and AD in town centre very helpful, even though they knew I was visiting and would buy in The Netherlands. Tried on DD 40mm YG and then big surprise as the AD said try 36mm in RG with diamonds. Really like the 36mm. Will try 40mm again when my Dutch AD gets one, but the 36mm was fab. 40mm all yellow was also too much and needs a different colour dial

What in the....
Yellow gold DD is now "tacky", with PCLs and fluted bezel are vulger.....you lost me.

This watch comes almost exclusively in that configuration, the only difference in the op is the dial. What do you want, a DD without a fluted bezel, no PCLs and not in gold, that's not even a DD then.

The new dial looks good to me but I would imagine in real life on the wrist it does not broadcast the diamond pattern like macro dial photos, I would bet this watch plays with light and angles so well that the dial fades into something that glistens and shines, much in the same way the sunburst dial of the Sub LV(imagine that dial in gold). Just a different play on the dial treatment.

I'm starting to really like this new dial more and more, especially in the glacier blue.

Hi, I mostly agree. To be honest, I think 36mm size is a bit too small, I also think 40mm is a major improvement relative to 41mm DD II. However, I still think 40mm DD is too large for this particular design. For me DD is a refined, dress watch and at 40mm it is as bulky, and the bezel still looks overblown and the watch begins to look more like a Rolex sports model. Personally, I think a 38.5mm size for this watch would be great. I would definitely be a buyer then. Btw, I also still hope once day they will launch the Exp II at 40mm again :)

I love the new DD40. And am currently fighting off the urge to buy one. I was in an AD, tried on a yellow gold with champagne dial. Perfect size for my 7.75 inch wrists...my little 36mm datejust needs a break.
I like the yellow gold with black cross hatched dial & the rose with brown cross hatch. Would have to flip a coin..

But I'm trying to fight it off..

I think if you haven't you need to try these on, they wear like 39mms, so right up your street, and feel as close to a 36 than 41.
