Saving my Pappy...for what, I’m not sure. Blanton’s will hold me over.

Pappy will make you happy!!!

Ok enjoy!!

A question for bourbon connoisseurs do any of you rate Jack Daniels as a quality bourbon or is it just great marketing?

Well according to the folks at Jack Daniel's, the answer is JD is not even bourbon:

Quote:
Jack Daniel's is not a bourbon - it's a Tennessee Whiskey. Jack Daniel's is dripped slowly - drop-by-drop - through ten feet of firmly packed charcoal (made from hard sugar maple) before going into new charred oak barrels for maturing. This special process gives Jack Daniel's Tennessee Whiskey its rare smoothness. It's this extra step - charcoal mellowing – that makes Jack Daniel's a Tennessee Whiskey. Take a look at our Process section for more information about how Jack Daniel’s is made.

Yeah, not a JD fan, if I’m honest. So many other quality American options...

Jack Daniel’s does fit the legal definition of bourbon, but they choose to market it as Tennessee Whiskey. That’s their choice. The charcoal filtering is the main difference. Personally, I love JD. There are different versions like black label, single barrel, and special editions like Sinatra Select. It’s all about personal preference. I didn’t care for Pappys or Blantons.

Old number 7 black label is ok. My go to is single barrel or Sinatra. If you’re ever in the southeast US, we’ll gtg for a whiskey sampling.

Read a review of the Sinatra select. They said it was over-oaked and over-priced. Is it worth the hefty price tag? Love the single barrel and it is reasonably priced. And for Pappy, never had it and for the ridiculous prices on the secondary market I most likely never will. Hear it is more hype than actually good and that there are many much cheaper bourbons that surpass it.

I have had a ton of bourbon throughout my short life and Pappy is absolutely insane at secondary prices, but if you can find it at actual retail cost it is the best bourbon I have ever had specifically the 15 year version.

There are some great bourbons out there but as soon as anything gets a good review now a days the prices get jacked up and people start hoarding it.

My man Chad has it right, JD is in fact Bourbon however the folks in Lynchburg prefer to market their product as Tennessee Whiskey rather than as a Bourbon to differentiate their product. The charcoal filtering while unique does not preclude it from being categorized as a Bourbon.

That said I would not say it is a highend or premium Bourbon, stylistically it is a tad more towards rye even though the mashbill does contain corn as it's majority grain. What the filtering in Maple Charcoal does do is remove the corn notes from the finished product. What they call "Mellowing" actually mitigates the corn sweetness which is what most Bourbon drinkers enjoy about Bourbon.

So in that regard, JD is a specific product, not a traditionally styled Bourbon, and is quite unique so it's appeal or likability is subjective and linked to it as a standalone rather than any category other than whisk(e)y.

Mitchers is okay at best. Mitchers 10 yr is pretty good and their 25 year is good.

If you want the closest thing to pappy van winkle you can get without getting it hands down without question the answer is W12 aka Weller 12. retail price is around 45 bucks secondary prices are about 100. This will be the closest thing you can have to pappy without having pappy

We will be at the beach sometime this year to spread Mom’s ashes. I’ll give you a ring once we have a date set.
