I have never been asked that or a similar question. If I were, I'd probably mention something about hand made manufactures and the fact that they typically cost more than mass-produced products. Plus you're paying for the brand.

A diamond and a brand new CZ look about the same.

Objectively, how does an Omega Seamaster go against a Submariner in terms of quality?
What about an IWC Pilot?
I imagine we pay some % of the price for the Rolex name alone (?)

She may have come by the question honestly, but I don't think people who wear luxury watches need to be put in the position of defending watch pricing.

If you asked her to justify the cost of her home, purse, jewelry, clothing or car, she probably wouldn't enjoy it

You can explain that it's no different than any other recreational pursuit. I know a guy who lives in a ratty old trailer house who has a $50,000 bass boat and a $30,000 camper trailer. I know all sorts of guys with more than one ATV at at least $5,000 apiece.

I used to be into golf, then NFA full auto fire arms, then highly accurized tactical rifles, then hunting, then lampworking, then scuba diving, now watches. They all cost about the same once you consider all that goes into it. The watches are just the latest chapter in my recreational lifestyle.

Like the equipment in my other hobbies, I prefer watches that are durable and will last two life times. That's why you pay more for one of these, and also why I'm willing to pay more for one of these.

OK seriously now, there really isn't an objective answer unless you are a vintage investor looking for future gains.

Owning modern Rolex models are better than stamp collecting where people pay Rolex prices for a gummed scrap of paper.

Exactly this.

A perfect 1carrot diamond vs. a flawed one carrot diamond and there is a huge difference in price. You may not be able to see the difference with the naked eye, but you'll always know it's there.

Well a modern Rolex isn't going to rise in value during our lifetimes.

But I agree it's a place people like to park a substantial amount of cash they can afford to spend.
Funny thing is this: I'm seldom asked in ordinary daily life - but on the weekends at the track while wearing a 116518 I do get asked "how much".
Drivers say, hmmm not bad...it's all perspective. These are guys who spend that much on a few weekends of fun chasing a $20 trophy - or a set of coilover adjustable dampers.

Easy answer: there is absolutely no justification whatsoever.

(When a woman asks, which seems rare to my experience. They usually just compliment) what is the justification for that Coach bag costing what it does? (Or whatever brand). Put the reply into context to the asker. Men: cars (or boats) are a good analogue. Women: shoes and/or handbags.

There are only x # of rolexes in the world, the demand exceeds that # hence the higher price than most other watches. It's a demand driven market, people want them, the prices are high.
