What place is that? I was thinking of Caique.

I think jiu jitsu would be great to start with because it is so technical, then later Krav or something before you hit the ground.

Not anymore but I used to do Judo. I was (still am) a black belt and was lucky enough to represent both Scotland & Great Britain at junior and senior level. Loved it at the time. Got to travel all over the world and see some special places.

Was pretty much full time as well as having a job and going to school so not a lot of spare time when I was younger lol.

Don't miss it at all now but it was a massive part of my life.

Sounds like you're taking some great steps to keep moving and get healthy! Keep going.

I'm actually in Japan right now for 10 days of training at our Hombu Dojo. I'm coming up on 30 years in the martial arts. Finally opened my own dojo last year.

Martial arts are something I have and will always enjoy.

My place teaches in the Carolinas. I would just find a good teacher with a good program in your area.

Once you totally immerse yourself in Jiu Jitsu you will have no need to delve into Krav Maga. I say this particularly if you find a Jiu Jitsu academy that also teaches self defense as mine does. We work on what to do when someone has you in various scenarios with a gun at your back, head, etc. How to defend against knife attacks, etc. Some Jiu Jitsu places only teach sport Jiu Jitsu and it is a bit different. Sport Jiu Jitsu focuses on scoring points in competition, etc. We teach Jiu Jitsu the way Grand Master Helio taught it and it aint about points in the real world.

And since Dean is in RB my home town he is 10 minutes from Original Gracie Academy run by Rorian and his boys son and grandchildren to Helio. Then 5 minutes away is Machado Jiu Jitsu run by Rigan Machado. So finding best schools in US not too hard for him if you know what I mean.

I'm totally impressed by the number of our members who are or have been, active in various martial arts! It seems as though many of you are well versed and trained in the art. I think that's impressive because not only does it show a love for physical fitness but also shows that you are able to commit to something for long periods of time!
I have found something that I truly enjoy and plan on going the long haul with it! I feel so much more alive and alert after a class! A few years ago my heart was so bad that I had trouble just climbing a flight of stairs without getting winded. Now, I can get thrown around and throw others around for an hour or two! Something I never thought would happen a few years ago!
My only regret is that I didn't get back into it sooner but I guess my heart probably prevented me from that!
The whole topic of Krav Maga intrigues me as well.

Whilst all styles have their individual strongpoints (and weakpoints) I personally feel that "street-focused" self-defence systems like Krav Maga are probably the best systems for people who are more concerned with self-defence as opposed to simply exercise.
The 'traditional styles' tend to be most effective in the hands of very skilled and experienced practitioners, whilst not so effective for the less experienced. Traditional Karate is very structured and even tournament kumite is rather divorced from the real world.
If I had my time again I would not study a 'traditional style' but rather a reputable (and proven) self-defence system of some sort.

My father is a black belt in Mudokwan Karate. He learned in the 60s got his BB and opened a school in our hometown in Texas. I remember watching all the training and sparring as a kid. He's 78 now and I still would not want to tangle with him. :). My 20 year old daughter is a black belt in both Kempo and Kenpo karate. Having studied some 8 plus years here in Hawaii. She is petite but tough as nails. I'm confident she could at least get herself out of an assault type situation. I enjoy watching, but never trained. Congrats to all who train in martial arts. It takes a lot of time and effort.
