Everyone who sees it will assume it is a fake, unless you have the other things to go with it, like a fancy car and expensive clothes.
I've noticed that some kids seem to wear monstrously large watches as a fashion statement. Wearing a Rolex at your age will tell everyone you have well off parents. If you're ok with that, then fine. I certainly won't judge. Any watch over a few hundred pounds/dollars is functional jewelry in my opinion and should be seen as such. |

I disagree with most of the posts here. A watch, specifically a Rolex, is a very traditional and excellent gift for milestones in ones life, be it graduation, marriage, retirement, etc.
Would I give a 17 year old a Rolex? Probably not. But then again, I don't have kids. Take it, and cherish it. |

I'm sorry, but I think it is. It should be something you earn or buy yourself. Could be for a graduation. But obviously you have 17 year-olds and 17 year-olds, if you are mature enough for your age and appreciate what you have, then I see no problem...

I would go with GMT over Sub. Don't worry about what people say about it. Just own it.

I say "Bull" to the people that say YOU have to do more to earn it. I will bet a few of them have bought and sold these more "special" watches. I think the fact that you'd consider not taking the gift without a second thought shows you are not too young. You obviously have a deep love and respect for your father and how hard he has worked. I say you "get it" and that you are not too young!!! I can't see how the fact that it's a gift from your father makes it any less special. I think it makes it more special. If you have lots of money and its a day's wages is it more special than a gift from your father? I don't see how. I say don't pass up this opportunity not because you get something for "free". Who cares about that. I say don't pass up this opportunity to get something special from your father. You won't have him forever and at that point the watch will always be a tangible reminder of that relationship. My advice is stay close to your dad. Continue to learn his work ethic and ask him how he did it and you will do well in this life.

Looks like you answered your own question. I believe you should have to work for it then you will respect and appreciate it. At 17 I would think there might be other things ahead of a watch such as a car and a house but hey if thats what you want go for it ... Good luck

The watch will hold its value and last a lot longer than a car. I'd say buy the car yourself and accept the watch as a gift.

I bought my little brother a SS Daytona a few months ago for his 16th birthday. He loves it can takes great care of it. Nobody gives him crap about it and we don't care if they think it's fake. We wear these watches for ourselves, not them :-)

17-18 all depends on you. My nephew just graduated and his dad gave him a TT thunderbird and he likes it. So I don't believe you would be to young.

***** The watch is first and foremost a gift from your father and secondly a Rolex. Cherish it as a gift from him everytime you look at it. And don't forget that most people will not recognise it as a Rolex. |

just buy it and post pix... nobody here can make the decision for you and you'll likely get one anyways... besides, we need younger board members to mix up the is it safe questions to include the following topics: 1) is it safe to wear a rolex on my driving test? 2) is it safe to wear a rolex at my bar mitzvah? 3) is it safe to wear a rolex at my dad's 39th birthday party? 4) is it safe to wear a rolex at... well, you know what i mean... |

Get it and be happy with it. Always count your blessings and remember to return the favor some day. Being humble is the key.

I think the fact you came on a forum about watches, shows enough appreciation for them, that you should be fine. Regarding people looking at you, 99% of people couldn't care less what's on your wrist, and the other 1% will judge anyone younger than them if they have a Rolex. I know 17 year olds responsible enough, and I know 37 year olds not responsible enough to own a nice watch... so I don't really think it's an age thing, it's about the individual.

For the wealthy, a Rolex is a conservative and humble route to go. Sometimes people forget that in other parts of the world, and in other circles, the young are wearing AP, PP and VC.
I've seen kid driving exotic cars that their parents purchased for them. Do you expect the young guy to drive his Lamborghini and wear an entry-level Tag? ....OP, my suggestion is to make sure that your car and your watch are in balance. And that at your age, having a nice car is much more fun and enjoyable than a watch. |

there's a kid down the street who received a 26mm TT/DJ for his 6th birthday...first watch. when he outgrows it (probably around 4th/5th grade), his parents are planning to buy him a 'grown-up/man-sized Rolex' that will hopefully serve him through middle school & HS.
HS graduation = a new BMW/Audi & completion of college/grad school = a 2 BR 'starter' condo in Marin County or Vail. for some, America is still the land of unlimited opportunity (& bribery)...no wonder more people want to come here than leave. |

It seems like you have a good head on your shoulders for 17.
From what I read YOU will enjoy/appreciate it more if YOU earn it like the rest of your family has. I would hold off until YOU can afford instead of having your dad get it for you. Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk |

I received a watch for HS graduation (10 years ago) as well. It wasn't a rolex, but I will never forget that experience with my dad. Enjoy it. And as many have said here, nobody will notice your watch unless you tell them what it is, or, they already have one. People that have one wont judge you.
