Everyone who sees it will assume it is a fake, unless you have the other things to go with it, like a fancy car and expensive clothes.

I've noticed that some kids seem to wear monstrously large watches as a fashion statement. Wearing a Rolex at your age will tell everyone you have well off parents. If you're ok with that, then fine. I certainly won't judge.

Any watch over a few hundred pounds/dollars is functional jewelry in my opinion and should be seen as such.

^This.

Get a summer job. Work hard and save your money. Match your parents contribution and then you will not worry about being judged.

I disagree with most of the posts here. A watch, specifically a Rolex, is a very traditional and excellent gift for milestones in ones life, be it graduation, marriage, retirement, etc.

Would I give a 17 year old a Rolex? Probably not. But then again, I don't have kids. Take it, and cherish it.

I'm sorry, but I think it is. It should be something you earn or buy yourself. Could be for a graduation. But obviously you have 17 year-olds and 17 year-olds, if you are mature enough for your age and appreciate what you have, then I see no problem...

I would go with GMT over Sub. Don't worry about what people say about it. Just own it.

Maybe a little young, 21 is a good age to receive/buy a Rolex. of course this is just my opinion.

Im 17 currently and I graduate high school in 9 days. I absolutely love watches and what not, do a lot of research just because I love to but I don't really have any "proper" watches I guess you could say. I have about 6-7 watches all costing less than $300 and the most recognized brand I wear is Diesel! Pretty much everyone in my family above the age of 30ish has/previously owned a rolex. My dad has a gold day-date with diamonds and so does my mom. My cousins have submariners and Yacht-Master IIs. So getting to the question, I asked my dad for a used stainless steel GMT-Master II to which he agreed but I feel like I'll be considered terribly spoilt for having one at such a young age especially considering the fact that my dad had to work very hard for his and he dropped out of school at 13 for financial reasons. Also in my family a rolex for some reason is more than just a luxury watch, its something you have to "earn" I guess. We're much better off now thankfully and my dad has agreed to getting me one for about $6400 but my question is will I be judged for wearing something of the sort? Also my usual attire is very causal e.g shorts and a polo/t-shirt because its usually so hot where I live in the Middle-East. So I'd like an everyday watch which I find the GMT-Master II to be perfect for. Also, would the GMT-Master II with a black bezel be too flashy? I prefer the gmt over the submariner simply because I like the polished aluminium links in the centre of the bracelet as oppose to the Submariner's brushed bracelet. Which do you think I should go for?
Many thanks!
I couldn't wear a rolex I asked my patents for in the end I believe you are the one that should work hard to earn it, if your father agreed to buy you one grab it as those watches are getting increasingly rare, although if I where you and if you want to enjoy the watch more offer to pay it back slowly trust me you will enjoy it more knowing that you earned it. Best of luck.

I say "Bull" to the people that say YOU have to do more to earn it. I will bet a few of them have bought and sold these more "special" watches. I think the fact that you'd consider not taking the gift without a second thought shows you are not too young. You obviously have a deep love and respect for your father and how hard he has worked. I say you "get it" and that you are not too young!!! I can't see how the fact that it's a gift from your father makes it any less special. I think it makes it more special. If you have lots of money and its a day's wages is it more special than a gift from your father? I don't see how. I say don't pass up this opportunity not because you get something for "free". Who cares about that. I say don't pass up this opportunity to get something special from your father. You won't have him forever and at that point the watch will always be a tangible reminder of that relationship. My advice is stay close to your dad. Continue to learn his work ethic and ask him how he did it and you will do well in this life.

Looks like you answered your own question. I believe you should have to work for it then you will respect and appreciate it. At 17 I would think there might be other things ahead of a watch such as a car and a house but hey if thats what you want go for it ... Good luck

The watch will hold its value and last a lot longer than a car. I'd say buy the car yourself and accept the watch as a gift.

I bought my little brother a SS Daytona a few months ago for his 16th birthday. He loves it can takes great care of it. Nobody gives him crap about it and we don't care if they think it's fake. We wear these watches for ourselves, not them :-)

17-18 all depends on you. My nephew just graduated and his dad gave him a TT thunderbird and he likes it. So I don't believe you would be to young.

The watch is first and foremost a gift from your father and secondly a Rolex. Cherish it as a gift from him everytime you look at it.

And don't forget that most people will not recognise it as a Rolex.

welcome!

just buy it and post pix... nobody here can make the decision for you and you'll likely get one anyways...

besides, we need younger board members to mix up the is it safe questions to include the following topics:

1) is it safe to wear a rolex on my driving test?

2) is it safe to wear a rolex at my bar mitzvah?

3) is it safe to wear a rolex at my dad's 39th birthday party?

4) is it safe to wear a rolex at... well, you know what i mean...

Get it and be happy with it. Always count your blessings and remember to return the favor some day. Being humble is the key.

I think the fact you came on a forum about watches, shows enough appreciation for them, that you should be fine. Regarding people looking at you, 99% of people couldn't care less what's on your wrist, and the other 1% will judge anyone younger than them if they have a Rolex. I know 17 year olds responsible enough, and I know 37 year olds not responsible enough to own a nice watch... so I don't really think it's an age thing, it's about the individual.

For the wealthy, a Rolex is a conservative and humble route to go. Sometimes people forget that in other parts of the world, and in other circles, the young are wearing AP, PP and VC.

I've seen kid driving exotic cars that their parents purchased for them. Do you expect the young guy to drive his Lamborghini and wear an entry-level Tag? ....OP, my suggestion is to make sure that your car and your watch are in balance. And that at your age, having a nice car is much more fun and enjoyable than a watch.

Would I give a Rolex to any of my kids after HS graduation... I would not.

It seems like you have a good head on your shoulders for 17.
From what I read YOU will enjoy/appreciate it more if YOU earn it like the rest of your family has. I would hold off until YOU can afford instead of having your dad get it for you.

I received a watch for HS graduation (10 years ago) as well. It wasn't a rolex, but I will never forget that experience with my dad. Enjoy it. And as many have said here, nobody will notice your watch unless you tell them what it is, or, they already have one. People that have one wont judge you.
