Interesting observation from a Tourneau Salesman

The salesman mentioned a client of his who owns a professional sports team (which one, he won't share) that bought an 18k gold sub from him and only wears that particular watch when they sign a new player. Every day the owner wears a Casio with a rubber strap. Those are the only 2 watches the man owns and he can afford to buy the Rolex building itself.

It's not a bad opinion but just not logical for many of us. I own enough watches that if I sold them all I could probably pick up a PLATONA or some other grail level watch. Unless I won the lottery tomorrow id still have to work and travel, and as long as I do both (especially simultaneously) I'd rarely ever wear that watch. And that's just no fun.

Sounds like that particular client is letting an excellent watch collect dust while he wears a plastic watch........Sorry, not for me.

Personally, I like having the variety of many watches. I've found that I have quit lusting after watches and have nearly completed my collection. Variety is the spice of life. A man could choose women or watches (among other things of course).....the watches are WAY CHEAPER.

(If my biggest accomplishment in life was a watch salesman at Tourneau, maybe I'd try to justify having only one watch - a cheap one)

As for the salesman's opinion, I tend to agree with him. I was perfectly happy with my Daytona until I joined this forum!

It's an up sales pitch. Instead of trading normal priced watches he's suggesting you spend the most you possibly can, and then carry on trading. He's not saying get a Holy Grail and stick to it, no just to wear it until you are tired of it and want to trade it again and climb back on the now much more expensive merry go round.

However the question of one Holy Grail v a few to wear in rotation is an interesting one and one that ofc is different for every individual. I would like to consolidate down to 3/4 in a Holy grail collection but can't see myself having just 1.

that's one of the reasons he's a wealthy & successful sports team owner...he doesn't waste his time & resources 'flipping' watches.

Obviously he does not spend time here, if he did his philosophy would change quick.
I was happy with 1 Rolex for many years. Did much like he described, wear it a few years and trade it in on a new one.
After finding watch forums, watches became much more of an enjoyable hobby. At this point I would miss the hobby activity too much to only have one watch.

I agree with quality over quantity but 1 Grail I would get bored of too quickly. I think 4-8 is the right number. When you start getting close to 8 it's time to start reviewing the collection and think about trading a few out to move up to something nicer. Only problem is when they all have sentimental value and you enjoy wearing all of them. Maybe 10 is a good number....

Also with one grail what do you do when it goes in for service, need a more casual beater, dress up more, etc?

Haha good point. I'm not your average consumer but someone who has an actual opinion that I respect is more likely to gain my business than someone who pushes a product on you relentlessly to no end. Not saying anyone really enjoys that, but that aggressiveness is not what makes a good sales rep to me, despite that being how most sales reps are trained to be.

All I was saying really though was that it's rare to have a positive experience/conversation with a floor rep at tourneau, so this guy is already ahead of pack.

To each their own, but from a personal perspective, I agree to a point.

Unless we are talking about gifts, something that was purchased for a particular accomplishment (sentimental value), a rare/historical piece, etc., then (I think) the more pieces that you have, the less important each one becomes.

If I am going to spend a fair amount of money on a watch - far more than I need to for something that is probably less accurate than a $100 atomic G-shock, then the last thing I want it to become something that I do not have a passion for.

+X2 And it exemplifies why "salesmen (salespeople)" are universally mistrusted. We know we can expect statements that have to be sifted for substance.

Recently, at an AD I overheard a salesman tell a woman that he obviously had served before, "I dreamed of this design for you last night and wanted to let you know right away. I knew you would be in today."
She absolutely melted. He could have sold her 3 Mercedes and a mink right then.
