I tried that watch on this weekend. I really liked it. I think it looks good on you. IMO 40-42 is the sweet spot. I'm not a fan of anything smaller or bigger. Although 42 is my upper limit the nice thing about the explorer II is that it is relatively thin compared to the other Rolex in the plus 42 sizes; making the size less obvious then say the DSSD.
But if you're not convinced, and you want others opinions, your wife already gave you the one that matters the most or at all. |

When you ask this question most often you know yourself the answer is yes.
In this cast I think it looks fine. |

Howdy,
I think it looks great and I would not let the size get to you. For starters, its not a fashion watch, not even close. Its a Rolex. Fashion watches are much larger (just watch any of those ridiculous Invicta infomercials and you'll see what I mean). Secondly, I don't see a 42mm Rolex going out of fashion. Its just not that significant enough of a size variation from the 40mm. Plus its a ROLEX. It will always be a ROLEX and will always be in a separate category than any fashion watch. The fact that so many people still think it looks good in its current version further reinforces that 42mm is not going to be dismissed as a fashion trend any time soon (if ever). Finally, you are what you are. Skinny, fat, whatever, accept it and wear what you like. Otherwise you are forever going to be a slave to what everyone else likes on you. Take care, Ruddiger |

I looked at black dial 42mm Explorers and found them a bit big also so went back to the 40mm 16570. You could do the same and pocket the difference?

I think it looks ok. I wouldn't go any bigger though. A bit more, but this is a nice option for a smaller, non-ceramic white dial SS Rolex. Otherwise, a prior gen Exp 2 would work well (just make sure you get one with a more modern clasp IMO otherwise you'll be disappointed coming from yours now)

It's not too big imo- it is what it is- large as it's designed to be ultra legible in the harshest conditions- even if most wearers will never see such conditions. The lugs are short in part to compensate for the large diameter, and they are not hanging over the edges of your wrist.
It looks on your wrist like it would look on nearly anyone else's- like a large explorer's watch. I think you should keep it. |

It looks a little big, but also looks a little too snug. If you opened it up slightly it might not seems so overpowering on the wrist.
Either way, it does looks good. If it's comfortable and you like the way it looks, definitely rock it! |

It is wise to listen to wives. Take her shopping for another watch. This will flatter her, acknowledged her wisdom, and potentially enable buying a very nice Rolex in a smaller size. You could keep the Explorer II just for very special sporting occasions.

From a distance, being not "in the know", the 42 mm white Exp2 might look like a fashion watch indeed. But I think it is gorgious and not too big, although the sweet spot for me would be 40 mm black dial.
