Go a couple miles south of Oakland Chinatown area, and you'll have Pho Ao Sen with the kickass pho and Ba Le for the awesome variety of banh mi sandwiches. Both make Cam Huong pale in comparison.

While not quite a hole in the wall, Brodard in Garden Grove with their outrageously addictive nem nuong pork rolls fits the HITW price and cuisine parameters. Their former sister location in Las Vegas got sold and rebranded into a place called Pho D'licious, and still has the nem nuong rolls (though avoid the pho, which is not good).

If you're ever in San Francisco, strap on your kevlar vest and head over to Tu Lan off 6th and Market. Get a bar seat, order #24, and enjoy the best Vietnamese imperial rolls and pork kebab you've ever had in your life. You won't regret it.

Other considerations. When in SF and in the mood for casual hofbrau-style dining, Tommy's Joynt on Van Ness Avenue. Also check out Nini's (off the 101) in San Mateo for a humongous breakfast.

If you're ever in Memphis, TN go by Uncle Lou's Fried Chicken. It's in a shady part of town and there's no way they'd ever pass a health inspection, but the chicken is d@mn good.

In Bangkok there are a ton of hole in the wall places to eat, most of which don't even have a name. With that said Sanguansri on Wireless road has some great food. There's a once a year dish that looks like deer droppings, but my friends claim it is great. |
