Unlike all the other offshoots and variants the Sea Dweller doesnt need silly descriptors. Its simply Sea Dweller sometimes with a descriptive adjective- Single Red Sea Dweller, Double Red Sea Dweller, Great White Sea Dweller, Triple Six Sea Dweller, Sea Dweller 4K, Deep Sea Sea Dweller. Sea :) a pattern? You silly GMT and Sub variant guys, we got this.

Too many syllables for the average Joe, who won't know how to pronounce it without hearing it at least once anyway.

If I were a betting man, I'd bet that SD43 sticks.

Why? Bc it is already being adopted and what is the most unique and different aspect/part of it that everyone think of immediately about it? The red letters? No. The cyclops? No. What is the most prominent new aspect???

The 43mm!

Oh, you'd put the AD right in between Scylla and Charybdis... Quite enjoying this thread now.

Nicknames are for children in the playground, Smurf, Hulk, Batman etc, I have found that the people that actually own these watches cringe at these names.

So, I guess you're not a fan of the old "Hey, awesome Batman! My Hulk says HI" type replies in the WYW threads?

Rolex advertised the new watch with emphasis on "50th anniversary".

Definitely SD50.

Straight forward, meaningful, and more official.

Did they change the seadweller? Is it still a tool watch? Heritage? Brand cachet?

I know you took a beating for suggesting this. I'm not a fan of nicknames myself and sobriquets are best when they arise spontaneously. That said, I want to at least serve up some credit for finding a cyclops who is the son of Poseidon. Well done. Still, his name means abounding in song and legend, he was a man eater and in modern contexts is mostly associated with a large silk moth. Tough crowd I realize but naming watches is an unpopular business in a place where they are, at best, grudgingly accepted.

It's gonna be a bun fight between the SD50 and SD43. I say SD43.

Since the previous one was commonly named the " SDc" I'd name this one SD50..

"SD-50", "SD-43", "RED SD-C" ...All relevant and all
beat "polyp....whatever" by a longshot.

The new Sea Dweller is the first 50th anniversary SD and surely it'll be the last since you can only have one 50 anniversary.

But I don't think it will be the last 43mm Sea Dweller. Rolex can change the red line back to white after 5-6 years (as some people suggested).

Sorry, Giorgia, nicknames don't occur because the leading affinity book publisher picks the name, declares it on a watch forum, and then goes to print with it.

Nicknames occur far more organically. They're imposed "bottom up" from a critical creative mass naturally imposed by the public, often, interestingly, from more than just a single source at a time.

But, hey, good try.

P.S. Polyphemus would be a fine nickname for something the doctor removes after excessive inflammation.
