Thoughts on being approached

To cut a long story short, I was in Puerto Banus the other day and spotted a ROO Bucherer edition (one of my favourites) on someone and wanted to mention to them my admiration however I thought it may come across as rude. Would love to know your thoughts and if you had ever been in a similar situation or the other way around where someone has stopped you to comment on what you're wearing and if you were unhappy about it?

I would probably be suspicious and guarded if it was on the streets. If in a nice restaurant etc then I would happily chat away.

Thoughts on being approached

I would not be unhappy at all but I never go beyond "nice watch."

It allows them to simply say thanks and doesn't drag them into an awkward conversation if they don't want to engage.

Of course setting is everything as Neil pointed out above...

actually about a week ago in an elevator at at houston hotel. Super weird. Some guy noticed my Ti44 and went on and on about how his boss has the "upgraded" gold one that costs $ XXXXX and wanted to know how much i paid for mine and how much less it was than his boss's. It was super weird and there were other random people in the elevator too. He got off the elevator at his floor and then i had to continue riding with the other random people not involved in the exchange and it was the most uncomfortable elevator ride ever.

I didn't tell him i have the gold one too

I did wear the 5164A for the majority of the trip though as literally no one knows what it is and that is sort of the point of that one to me. The AP is pretty loud so people do notice but still was not expecting that.

Ooh, talking money with a stranger is big no no, but I guess this guy and his boss have too much going on for him to observe the boundaries of social etiquette.

yep. I don't mind talking watches but as soon as money is mentioned I'm done. Plus the implication my watch was not "upgraded" isn't the best way to start a conversation. Its like saying "nice watch, but i know someone with a better one"

That's why you just pick the best one to begin with

The guy was just enjoying a coffee on the harbour, looked as though he was relaxing on his own so decided not to bother him. Would have loved to have talked watches with him but you just never know!

The most of expensive-watch-wearers aren't WIS. Never forget this, because most people feels threatened understanding that you know the value of the watch... Should really be a private situation, not public. just my two cents

So I think one thing I can take away from this is that, like it being socially unacceptable to pass wind in lift, so is it to comment on a mans watch

On a serious note I think as mentioned by Tom, I think a quick "Nice Bucherer edition" and walk would have been enough without being too invasive or intrusive

It would depend on weather you were wearing one of your AP baseball caps!

Haha I had the green cap with me on holiday but not on at the time! I'm sure it would have been him approaching me then!

So you preferred the green one to the white one?

Yes, had to bring that one away with me I love it! Will probably get more wear out of the white one in England however. I have started to build a shrine at home with all the AP books and merchandise I have collected so far at which my green hat will sit majority of the time. Anyway when is your next AP golf day? Perfect opportunity for me to bring out the cap and caddy for you!

I was at the AD the other day and a guy came in wearing a Legacy, he was collecting a RM11 rose gold, he was dressed like he had nothing to prove to the world...except for the watch. On my way out I said 'nice Legacy'. Although he smiled he probably thought I was a muppet.

Circumstances are everything but generally a cordial "nice watch" should not be taken with offense.

I never comment. For most it's just a watch.

I don't mind unless that person says "Nice [insert brand you don't like and clearly the person has no clue] you have there".

I wouldn't like it if I was travelling in a place I am not familiar with though.

I do it all the time, but I mention the specific model or reference (for instance actually tonight I commented on someones 5524g and it sparked up a conversation while I'm traveling only to find out he is from 30 minutes where I live). Just don't bring money into it and you're all fine.
