Update:

I picked up the watch today.

Decided to go for a new bracelet, and i am so glad I did - watch is like new!

Although "Trigger's broom" does spring to mind!

My humble opinion is that you do the service of the watch and that the bracelet leaves it as it is and you put the watch a beautiful and fine leather bracelet. It seems to me that paying 1,000 pounds (1300 american dollars) is not worth it,

....until another 13 years from now in 2030 when he needs to spend another 1,000 pounds on a bracelet?

If the first bracelet wore out in 13 years, then I would assume the second bracelet would wear out in 13 years if exposed to similar environmental and wear conditions.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that solid link SS bracelets hold up much better. I would have bought that. They are hard to get, but it is possible.

HOWEVER, I am glad that you are happy with your watch now and I wish you many years of great wear!

That won't happen, as I have bought another (non-Rolex) watch to share the duties, and I am going to use my sports watch for everyday. I am going to take a little more care in future.... honest!
