If Prince William wears one to a black tie event, I think it’s pretty safe for the rest of us.

He's an Omega Watch man, isn't he? I know Prince Andrew wears a DD and Prince Harry sometimes has an Explorer II.

To the OP, before I became a cop, I was a captain in a 5-Star restaurant and I wore a tuxedo everyday. I also wore my GMT everyday.

Yes, but not as a "dress" watch. I wear my Subs with everything. That is one of the reasons I dig Subs, you can wear them with just about anything and for just about any activity.

I do not wear suits as much as I once did. I rarely attend formal events. At one point, I had a dedicated dress watch to wear with formal attire, but at this juncture in my life there really is not reason to own a true dress watch.

Do not get me wrong, I love a nice dress watch, but the expense is not worth it for something I might wear a couple times a year. So for a business suit I will wear a Sub and if I am going to a really formal function I can go without a watch or wear an old 2 hand museum Movado.

Can you?..of course. Would I?..never in a million years.

I don't own a Submariner but have a Seamaster, a Sinn 203 Arktis and other dive style watches. A dive watch is not a dress watch but the idea that any watch is ever a bad choice is unpopular. It's not the best choice so as long as I own others I'll pick something simpler or at least less toolish when in a suit. It's like tennis shoes with a suit in my mind. Yes, they are shoes but not the best choice with a suit.

I don't stick to the only wear pure dress watches with a suit concept and will wear my Milgauss with a suit, but a big bold numbered bezel is not my idea of something that pairs well with a suit just because it's expensive.

If an imaginary James Bond could do it then it must be right. Actually, I'd wear what ever watch I felt like. Likely something a bit fancier but I wouldn't exclude it especially if it is your only watch.

The LNc sub can definitely go a bit formal with today's fashion. We're in a time when one makes their own fashion rules. Go for it!

Agreed. I'm not sure a Sea-Dweller would be as versatile due to its size. I think the Sub can do it all.

Any watch I own can be pulled into duty for a shirt/coat and tie.

If it can't, it has no business in my collection.

How many people own a Land Rover and never take it out of the city?

The only time I wouldn’t wear a watch of my choice in a situation is if the invitation specifically stipulated otherwise.

It’s not the James Bond nonsense or anything but it’s a bit like saying you can’t have red wine with chicken or fish. Whilst it might be protocol, for want of an expression, I don’t generally like white wine so won’t drink it.

Wear your Sub how and where you want unless it’s a formal occasion and the invite says don’t.

Do you wear SUBs, as a dress watch?

I have a BLNR that I wear most places. For a dress watch I use my Omega Seamaster 300 Coaxial. I think the cleaner dial, thin bezel and wider bracelet looks dressier.

In this day and age especially, when anything goes, it certainly seems acceptable to me. Prince William wears his 36mm Omega Seamaster exclusively, and that includes some mighty formal occasions. That black dial and bezel look great with anything!

When I wear a tie the sub stays at home. It's really not a question of is it appropriate. I don't wear a tie often so I look at those moments as opportunities to dust off my dress timepieces and take them for a night on the town. :)

I realized this weekend that while I wear a suit and tie every day to work (usually with a Sub), I don't feel like I'm 'dressing up', just wearing a work uniform. This weekend I wore a coat and tie to a fancy art opening/cocktail reception-- something more elegant than my navy or grey corporate suit-- and I felt like my 70s dressy vintage deville on a croc strap felt right - more suited to a dress up occasion wear wearing something different. So maybe if I rarely sore a suit, I'd be more likely to pair it with something dressier when I did.
