DJ41 is the modern classic (don't listen to the haters, people are generally resistant to change). Everyone has a Sub (don't get me wrong, it's a good watch), but expect to blend in

I'll go against the grain and say DJ41. It wouldn't be my pick (but then, neither would TT), but you did say two things:
1. His most desired watch is a DD 2. He likes gold jewelry This leads me to believe he's less of a "tool" watch guy and more of a "flash" watch guy. Go with the DJ41.

Really? I don't think Rolex is trying to compete with Michael Kors.

I second this.
If you think about it, none of the Rolex watches have even proportions. Even the Sub is "disproportionate." Just look at the hands vs the hour markers. Different sizes, shapes, etc. Yet, it is arguably the most iconic watch in the world. I guess we should all throw away our disproportionate Rolex watches. Especially our watches > 36mm because this has got to be the decade, not the past two decades, that "the big watch trend" will finally end lol |

I like the DD vintage strategy. If patience works for you then try the DD. Amazing wedding gift.

I’m going with DJ41.
He likes the DD so I’m going with this rather than the Sub.

If his sense of style is ultimately a DD, then the DJ41 should appeal to him the most. Then again the TT Submariner date is gorgeous.
Sorry can’t help |

Datejust 41 vs Sub
Both are so good you can’t go wrong. I went DJ41 for my first / only (at this point) Rolex. It’s slightly more versatile on the dressy side and works well in casual too. I opted for stainless but the TT with fluted bezel will certainly have more of the Day date feel than the Sub. I guess that could make it a better or a not better choice depending on how you look at it. I am also looking for a birth year DD one day but for my first / daily driver I think it makes sense to go with a new (or newer) model. My two cents - again you can’t go wrong, you are giving an awesome gift - congratulations and best wishes for lots more fun and success in the future!

Totally agree with this. Get a nice blue or rhodium DJ41 and you’ve got something that is a great go anywhere option and is extremely satisfying to look at on the wrist all day. I see what feels like 40,000 Subs a day on banker bros so they just seem too common to me so maybe I’m biased...but the DJ is more refined in my eyes. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

You future husband seems to prefer a dressy watch, so DJ is the logical choice. He'll love it. If he'd prefer the TT Sub, you'd have heard it from him as it's an iconic watch.

[QUOTE=ar0821;8327706]My jeweler has also been looking for the day date president 1988 model with papers which is the one he wants the most, but not sure if I should put the money towards an older model or just purchase a new sub.[/QUOTE
I feel your pain. I have a ‘87 President and I am looking for a vintage Sub. Good luck finding your fiancé the he most wants. In my minds eye when I hear Rolex I think about those two watches. Get the President and save the Sub for an anniversary! |

so my AD was able to find a 87/88 day date running about 12k (states he can budge on the pricing) with box and papers. haven't looked at the condition of the watch yet. does this seem reasonable?
