Those that disliked chronographs, did Daytona change your mind?

I am a bit of a petrol head but I have never found that I actually needed a chronograph function and I used to be indifferent towards chronos, preferring divers and GMT's. When I researched the history and design of chronographs I became enamoured of this complication. I think chronographs are the most interesting complication. A good chronograph is a technical achievement and I love the idea of wearing this complex and minute timing machine on my wrist. That’s the fascination of all tool watches - we rarely use or need these complications but they are wonderful to own.

I also think chronographs look great. The Speedmaster and the Daytona are very masculine, well designed and cool looking watches. Well designed chronograph dials are marvels of compact and intricate dial design. I think if you are on the fence about chronographs, once you have seen a Daytona in the flesh, chances are that it will change your mind. Its a great looking piece and its perfect at 40mm in my view and fits quite comfortably on my 6.5 wrist.

The Daytona is a cool watch and it is easy to get caught up in the hype and beautiful pictures on the internet. I have owned the Daytona in SS, TT,YG and RG and in the end it is too small and too expensive, for me. I get the history but it would be difficult to find a SS Daytona for a reasonable price. I own a Speedmaster Professional Co-Axial 44.25 and enjoy it as much or more than any Daytona I have ever owned. If you have the doubt I would wait until you sorted it out.

If you aren’t feeling the watch before you buy it, you probably won’t like it after you buy it.

I've always loved Chronos, my first proper Chrono was a Heuer Carrera 1964 Re-Edition loved it and am on the lookout for another.

I then went through a stage of simplicity and the Panerai thing happened to me.

I bought a 116520 back in 2006 and didn't gel with it, it got sold and then in 2008 I bought another, ended up trading that for a SE Panerai then I got another Daytona and fell out with it shortly afterwards. So I had 3 and thought it was out of my system.

I then saw a ceramic in the metal and the love affair started again. I can now confirm I really do love the Daytona and am lucky enough to own a beautiful 116520 from 2002 and have a genuine OEM ceramic bezel which makes it almost identical to the 116500. Really is the best of both worlds.

Who knows if the call comes for something else soon in white gold the Daytona may well be used as a bargaining chip. How I see it I can always replace it at a later date if not!!

An idea. Buy a fake one for USD 100, wear it for a week, and then think about to buy a real one or not....

I have the Speedy Co-axial and the D500. However, I am wearing the Submariner 24/7 so I will reduce the collection in the future and sell of all chronographs.

I've a couple of Speedmasters / G Shocks yet rarely use the Chronograph functions EXCEPT the time many years ago during weekends, I would cheekily use the chrono to measure the elapsed time taken for the boring priest to deliver his sermons at the Sunday Mass. I don't dislike, don't need a Daytona but the Chrono function is sweet, so much fun to play with at the right place, at the right time Didn't Pope Francis remind priests to keep speeches brief not more than 10 minutes ?

I’m not sure another brand solves the ultimate question ... do you want a chrono watch?

i actually love chronographs (have 2) but i can't say that the daytona is amazing compared to others design wise. It's an iconic watch though, just like the speedmaster

My wife and I are not fans. I did actually use it at Le Mans but with the speed of cars, it really is a bit of an outdated tool next to an I-phone, at least I tried. For wife it is purely about the look, I am a car guy.

Well, first off, I think there's a huge difference between hating chronographs and not really a chrono guy. If you're in the former category, then I think you just don't want to go down this road.

Now, not being a chrono guy, I can relate. I'm not either. But, the Daytona is such a great watch, I think it's worthy of our consideration. Looks, rock solid movement, robust-ness, it's got it all.

If I had to trim the collection, it would probably be one of the first to go. But, all in all, if you're in the latter category, it's definitely worth a shot.

I like chronographs, but the prices of Patek, Daytona or ALS are too much.
I'd probably go with the Speedy, Tudor or a Navitimer.

Gray side of the moon is the most i'd spend on a chrono.

I've never "disliked" chronographs, I did, and still do find the complication pretty useless to me however. That said, yes, the daytona did kind of sway me. It might be my favorite watch now. I even Added a speedy tuesday recently, but the love started with the daytona.

Love chronos - my favorite “type” of watch. Mostly the aesthetic of the registers look and pushers. You’ll never know unless you date one
