17.5 for bnib is a pretty good deal considering I just sold the same watch used for higher than that! And the crazy thing is there were A LOT of people ready to pay even higher! Madness!!

The premium isn’t actually that big once you factor in taxes too. 25/30 percent. That’s what you would loose on depreciation for anything else. I’d just pay it.

If I wanted the watch over others and had no means of getting without waiting 5 years, I’d be all over it at that price. 17.5 seems pretty fair to me.

Everybody seems to have a Sub or SeaDweller these days, if its the white face Daytona you want then buy it, its only $3500 over MSRP. One price increase from Rolex and your virtually there, its a great price. I'm sure you won't be satisfied with anything other than the Rolex so go for it.

Daytona premium dilemma.
Do you really want this watch and is it your grail? Do you want it more than owning two other watches that might not tug at your heart strings in quite the same way? Do you prefer a SS Daytona over a PM one on Oysterflex or a strap? If so, then don't worry about the money. I understand that you want to recoup your money if you have to sell, but ultimately watch appreciation is not about money or future value. If you have the available cash and it’s your grail, then nothing else will satisfy you. As Sir Henry Royce said, you will appreciate the quality long after the price is forgotten.
The market value of the Daytona is the price consumers are paying grey and used. So you are not being fleeced (in fact, as others have noted, you are being offered the watch at a very competitive price). The price is determined by demand and availability. Bar a financial crisis, which will effect things so much more important than the price of watches, I don’t see these prices going down. But if they do go down, what does it matter so long as you love the watch? Forget the AD retail price as well. The retail AD Daytona market has unfortunately become a Rolex/ AD Ponzi scheme used to sell Datejust‘s and pm models. It’s a way to extract more money from the customer with the reward of a possible future Daytona purchase. And once you are on this list you may be offered a Daytona in one or ten years, as AD's constantly manipulate their lists and put favoured customers at the head of the queue. Or you may be told you can only have a black one when you want a white one, and if you don't take it you will not be offered another as the AD has bigger fish to fry. Ultimately it would be cheaper to buy used or grey. Forget this talk about having your name on the card too. I accept that it might affect the Rolex warranty on the watch and that's nice to have - if you can get it (and remember that good grey dealers offer their own warranty and, furthermore, a Rolex full service, which comes with its own warranty, is relatively cheap). Aside from that, it’s far more satisfying to have the watch on your wrist than your name on a piece of plastic that sits in a box at the back of your closet for years without being looked at. Daytona premium dilemma.
I sold it for a friend. I recently picked up a black 116500 at MSRP and I have no interest in flipping it, the $5k -6k isn’t enticing enough. I enjoy wearing all my watches. Sorry to disappoint you, but not all buyers of 116500 are flippers. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |

I’d be putting the $17.5 K out there, and put it on here for $19k a deal.
Then I would by a sub c date, a P.O. doesn’t displace a Sub six digit, and toss in DJ41 Jub TT, done, |

If it’s your grail, you won’t regret paying $17.5 for it.

After tax you’re close to $13.5k retail so that makes the delta a bit easier to swallow. Just have to figure out what the opportunity cost of that other $4K is worth. Going to be tough for others to figure that one out for you.
As stated above, $17.5 seems to be a reasonable secondary market price for this piece so you should be relatively protected from an investment standpoint in the near term. And like Chute said above, if it’s your grail, you probably won’t regret paying the $17.5k for it anyway. Good luck. |

If you have to question about the current value then you’re better off not buying it. Go with what you’re comfortable with by spending less money on a different model. Good luck.

The 116500 is sublime, it’s the most well built Rolex and the comfort level is superior to all. This piece is worth more than 20k IMO.
Buy it, you wont regret it. |

Have a DJ, Submariner with serti and Daytona...for me, the Daytona is...just special. I don’t think you’ll regret the purchase. Rarely wear the other 2 once the Daytona joined the family.
Everyone loves beautiful items...until they see the price. Life is short, don’t compromise, get what makes you happy. As others have clearly stated, if indeed, you simply don’t enjoy the Daytona, sell it. At least you can say you tried it and it just wasn’t you... BTW, nice problem you have! |

If you are open to YG, I suggest look at a TT Skydweller with champagne dial. Saw one this past weekend in the wild and it looks great in person, and with champagne dial, it doesn't look that far off from YG version.
Here is one on this forum for sale: https://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=613177

There was a private seller with a YG Daytona and MOP dial on the forums about 3months back. 21k.
I don’t think it sold. I was considering buying it when I jumped into my 116718. If you’re spending 20k and like YG, honestly consider adding another 3-5k and going full blown YG sports model on bracelet from a trusted seller (or another sound seller on the forums). It’s worth the premium at that point and you’re already shelling out 20k... Deals can be had on YG daytonas. Know what configurations you’re open to buying. Keep shopping, keep an eye on the for sale forum, and be ready to drop the change when you see it from the right seller and act fast. That’s the best advice I can offer. The market is crazy right now.

$17,5 is a bargin if you don't have a AD connection. You'll kick yourself if you pass it up.

Speaking from experience...
I bought a 116520 Daytona way above MSRP exactly 10 years ago and it went dramatically down in value almost immediately. Only now is it worth about what I paid for it.
Thankfully it was a birthday gift to myself and it will never be for sale. Given you are saying you want “something that will retain value in case you want to cash out” I strongly recommend NOT buying a Daytona. If your current thought process is that you might need to sell in the medium term - 5 to 7 years - I think there is a very very strong chance you will get burnt. The hype WILL wear off as supply slowly comes through and the prices will drop; it happpened with the 16520 and the 116520. They will be less scarce and almost as new second hand models will come back to at or below MSRP. I would have been better off financially 10 years ago buying a Kermit and GMT. But thankfully I love my watch, so the price is not relevant. However it sounds like for you the value retention is important.

I will always stick to my position and never pay more for a watch than MSRP.
