The Daytona is a nice reference for sure, but the Rolex Submariner, the original no date version, is without a doubt an elegant piece that can easily stand as a dress watch with mountains of provenance....the Rolex Submariner (Date or No Date) is classic and perfect in a tuxedo, suit, jeans, or a bathing suit in my opinion.

Really is and can be your only watch, it's an epic reference, my opinion only.....

To my eye it's about the bezel style. I don't think one has to jump all the way to a 34mm two hand dress watch on a leather strap just because they have a necktie on...that's more tuxedo territory. I just prefer a simpler design with a dress shirt with or without a jacket and tie. I wear my Milgauss and even a Speedmaster or my Titanium Seamaster that has a low key bezel that matches the case with a suit all the time. Just not a watch where the bezel is the dominant feature like a Batman or god forbid something like a YM II.

Even this Sinn 203 is less bold. Probably would not pair it with a suit but it plays OK with a dress shirt.

I agree that the bezel and even the thickness (and the lugs to a smaller extent) play a bigger role than the actual diameter for me.

I have a DJ41 TT, Fluted, champagne dial with diamonds. Absolutely love it. I have worn it with everything from dress clothes to swimming trunks. Next time I wear with a suit I’ll take a pic to share..don’t wear suits that often though. Also have a SubC and think it’s a great pair.

I have have a sub & am not a big DJ fan...until now. Damn nice looking watch! Great combo with the jubilee & Roman numerals.

I agree - nothing better then a DJ and a suit. Personally I’m not a fan of the diamonds.

It’s such a coincidence to read this post because I feel exactly the same as the op. I too have a submariner and love it but I want a blue or rhodium datejust 41 to wear with a suit on more “formal” occasions. I have struggled with the diamonds or no diamonds decision too. Leaning towards diamonds because hey “it’s a diamond encrusted Rolex!” How fantastic is that? But I do get the subtle, classic appeal of the stick markers so it’s a struggle.

SO, I kinda now want the DateJust 41, jubilee bracelet, fluted bezel, black or blue dial, diamond markers. I know that diamond markers part is kinda polarizing to people. Anybody have that exact config that they have pics of under a shirt/suit cuff?
No I don't have a modern DJ or DD; I have the Sky D with blue dial as well as older DJ and DD watches. I also have and OP and a 6694 the later is a manual wind date from Rolex. They all can be used as dressier watches than the Sub C. Actually the DJ isn't really a dress watch nor are any of the Rolex line other than the Cellinis.

I don't really think that anyone now considers the Sub C a tool watch. It stopped being that a while ago. It's now an expensive piece of jewelry and really should be worn as such. Oh it can still do it's old tricks but with the shiny ceramic bezel it really doesn't look the part. Besides, no one really cares what's on someone's wrist other than your basic WISs. Buy what you like and listen to your feelings however recognize that none are judging you by the watch you wear with a suit.

Hardy could wear a rainbow Daytona with a pair of jorts and Hawaiian t-shirt and still look like a boss.

But regardless. the sub does look great dressed up or down

If you go to a event where it’s a tuxedo the correct watch is actually no watch. It’s considered very rude to be keeping track of time at such an event. I vote diamonds. I think it makes the whole face look more balanced. I have a sub and a DJll and they are the perfect combination no need to have another watch imo.

I wouldn't wear a sports watch with a suit any more than I'd drive a pickup truck to a wedding. If you want to buy a sub as your only Rolex, then spend $500.00 on a really nice vintage Hamilton,Omega, or a multitude of other dress watches. The only time I wear a suit is for Church or Lodge so I'd be hard pressed to spend thousands on a Patek, Vacheron, Reverso ect. A DJ is probably more versatile than a sports watch and can probably be worn in all but the most formal occasions. I'd suggest thinking about a DJ which can be worn about 90% of the time, and for the other 10% a relatively inexpensive vintage dress watch on a strap.

DJ is ideal with a suit, used to wear its big brother with one, esp nice with matching cufflinks.

I agree, I prefer to wear a formal dress watch with a suit. Sport watches draw the eye too much when worn with a suit. People should look at you and say "Wow that guy looks sharp!" not "What kind of watch is that rogue wearing?"

I like the suggestions above Patek, Vacheron, Reverso, vintage Omega pie pan... So many fun choices!

Suits, beach...vacations...
If you had a DJ, you'd be here asking us about a Submariner or something more sporty and "casual", and whether the Submariner or GMT would work or if the DJ would suffice for your needs.

Let's cut the proverbial "crap". You want another Rolex. The DJ is an excellent choice, I myself want a DJ41, rhodium or chocolate diamond dial, fluted bezel on a jubilee. But first the SD43. I don't give a damn about how it looks in a suit or what people say. I only care what I see on my wrist when I look down.

Get the DJ. Great watch....now what's next.

It’s not about what you are wearing it’s about tje vibe you put out. The right vibe will make any outfit or watch look killer and like a million buckS. So rock what yo momma gave you!
But to answer your question, I think thr Sub looks great with anything. Looks like you only watch? Ok and? In the best of any world having a Rolex for dress and everyday use is the goal. So if you can afford a DJ 41 and the Sub for sure. Otherwise it’s a Rolex, just that fact means you can rock it anytime and place!

I'm not even saying it's a bad choice but surely a Datejust or something without a giant bezel would be the better choice. You lost me to the other side of the road when you added diamonds though.
Perfectly said.

I’m with the OP. I love my sub, but I don’t like wearing it with a suit. If I’m keeping one watch, it’s my DJ.
