For what it's worth, I know the name of one of the foremost Porsche mechanics in the country. He's in Torrance. He worked on my Porsche in the '90s, when his shop was just starting out and he is top drawer. In fact, he's something of a bigshot now, but a great mechanic. PM me for info.

911's are tough customers- but depending on how hard you beat them it can add up (I spend many daytonas on this hobby maint.)- traded my 2001 turbo for a 2003 TT X50 in 2003 and have enjoyed every moment since- get an extended warranty on a used 911 to save $ or spec out one a la carte and get it "your way." Depending on the configuration you will have many extra "daytonas" built into the car or on your wrist. Have fun.

Just took my 2000 996 Cab out for a Christmas day drive, and it was great in the snow and ice =P
When it comes to sports cars I think 911s are some of the most reliable ones on the market. This is why you see so many used ones out there with very high mileage. They make great daily drivers and there really isnt much maintenance involved. My car had a rather large repair bill this past summer due to a failed ABS computer, but when I talked to a few mechanics (over 5 of them) they all said they ahve never replaced one in their decades at the different dealerships and tuner shops. Just unlucky on my part I guess, but I still have great faith in Porsche.

I'm a Porsche fanatic, and hope to own one, someday (by the time I can afford one, cars probably wont run on gas anymore). I've never had one in the shop for problems, only the occasional oil change. They do leave me scratching my head sometimes though, crazy german engineered cars.
We had one of these show up at a car meet in Oakville one night, a TechArt GT Street RS. My friends think I'm crazy, but I'd take this car hands down over any Ferrari/Lamborghini. Talked to him for a bit. Had 2500km on the odo, was waiting for it to break in so he could take it to the track. He had a heavily modified Z06 before this car that got written off at the track when someone hit him or something. Very nice guy, I didnt get a ride though... However, this is probably my dream Porsche, the last of the air-cooled cars, a 993 TT.... I also wouldnt mind a 959, but ya, that definatly aint gonna happen.... |

I have the 1997 model 993 "last of the air cooled engines"
I may sell mine in the spring. I have 3 kids and they can't all fit in for rides. May even sell my 1997 DD with it to complete the effect....hmm Cost a LOT less to maintain my Porsche than ANY of my Rolexes!

The difference is unmistakeable. I'm finding it very difficult to drive the Turbo anywhere near the speed limits (not a good thing), it's just very hard to keep your foot out of the accelerator. But the Carrera S is no slouch either, it is defintely the next best thing to the Turbo and for a lot less money on the purchase as well as on the insurance and the maintenance.

I have owned several Porsche over the years, including several factory Porsche racecars. I raced for 10 years.
Porsche have had different followings for each body style in the 911 series. Almost cult like. Pre 1990 were the 911s, 90-94 were the 964s, 95-98 were the 993s, 99-04 were the 996 and currently from 2005, they are the 997s. Each year Porsche did body style changes, but also mechanical changes. The 997s and 996s were mass produced and the resale values haven't been that great. If I were you, I would buy a used one with a factory warranty. These cars are built tough, but still break. To work on them can be expensive and the older ones have more up keep. The best value is the 996, it never took off like the 993s and 997s. The turbos are selling for a fraction of the original selling price. If you want more, just PM me. I would be glad to help. The newer the series, the more of a touring car it has become, the older cars can be raw but a blast to drive and own. Talk to your local Porsche club, it's a great place to start. Good luck. |

I sold my last Porsche back in 1992. I really wanted another one since about 2002 but I just couldn't get past the look of the front end and headlights of the 996 body style. As soon as I saw the body change that came out in 2005 I knew I was going to get another one.
