In a way I was happy it had a ding so then I didn’t have to worry about scratches and dings anymore from then on - which funnily after that it never suffered anything similar again!

Then in 2014 it was serviced by the RSC for the first time and when it came back it was buffed ever so gently and you can barely see it now.

after 12 years the watch must be pretty worn? My pieces even though worn in rotation and somewhat babied for look well used after a couple of years... Every year there is at least a couple of big dings, cant even count small scratches...

I don't like scratches , dent or dings in my watches but over the years I have grown to accept them as part of ownership and wear. Give it a few weeks and see if it is still a big deal. If so, let Rolex take a look at it, if not, don't.

Actually I think it’s still in very good condition. See pic below. This was after a recent RSC service this year. Doubt you can see the ding, but I know where it is and it’s on the bottom right lug, a tiny area that’s a bit shinier and that’s where the ding was/is.

Love this sub. Bought it from a London AD in 2005 and was a daily for 10 years, til I got a PAM but this one still gets majority of wrist time.

Hi there just got around to posting for the first time after acquiring my dream watch 114060 a few months ago. I have been reading daily and have learned so much from all of you. I have wore my watch everyday all day since I picked it up and I absolutely love it.

This weekend I had my first scratch and I knew it would happen eventually but I didn’t think it would be on the top of the lug! I had a pair of pants on with zippered pockets and believe when I put my hand in my pocket it caught the 5 o’clock lug. I am devastated as everytime I look down it’s the first thing my eyes are drawn towards. In daylight you can see it especially when the sun catches it.

I don’t have much experience with metal so I don’t think I trust myself to use a scotch brite pad escpailly on the lug. I have read so many posts about lugs loosing their sharp edge with polishing and that’s the last thing I want to happen.

I am within an hour drive of a RSC and I have called and they said to bring it in and they see what they can do. I am a bit hesitant as I don’t want to start making anything worse or losing symmetry by just fixing one lug.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated and thanks in advance for your time

Sorry for the pictures. Not the best at photography.

Feel free to show me your lug scratches to make me feel better.
Those scratches are so miniscule just cannot understand why you guys fret and worry over such trivialities. All everyday wearing scratches should be left to normal routine service every 5-8 years when watch will returned as good as new only to get scratched again. If you are going to worry and fret over the slightest scratch just leave your watch in its box, then not much point in buying a Rolex .

Wish my Rolex still looked that good. In a year or two it’ll blend in with all the other scratches you’ll acquire. I plan on sending mine to RSC when it’s 5+ years old. Until then, it’s going to get scratched. Part of wearing a watch.

Exactly. Do not try to fix a non existent problem.
If you want a like new watch, do not wear it.

Normally I'd say don't worry about it, there are plenty more coming. (You should see my sub). But, it really sounds like it's driving you nuts.
Maybe just make the hour drive to RSC and see what they say. They may be able to give it a quick spin on the polish wheel and ten seconds later have it like new.
But, remember, scratches will continue to come.
Good luck

Don't touch it. It will polish itself out over time as you wear the watch.

When I first got my SubC, I was paranoid and would check it every time I bumped into something. Even if I was wearing a long sleeve shirt.

Now I don't even bother checking my SubC if I knock it into something.

I would very gently buff it out with a kitchen scrub sponge.

Leave it. It's not bad at all. Overtime it'll polished it self. Besides, you'll get more scratches and dings anyway.

Congrats! Just a matter of preferences here. I'm sure anyone skilled in refinishing could easily take the scratch out - it's the first of many though. I'd leave it until your next service in a few years.

that looks to be minor. Should be an easy fix. You should see the first major scratch on my 1 year old BLNR

By wearing it these scratches will disappear over time. If it really bothers you than go to the RSC. It will take them only 5 minutes to fix that without ruining the case, don't worry about that

Aren’t zippers brass? I would assume that brass is much softer than your stainless steel. Try using a brass remover (gun cleaners have this) as it might be superficial. I can’t imagine it being very deep at all

Good advise.

If the first drink doesn't work.
Have an ever increasing amount until it takes full and permanent effect
