This has been circulating all summer and the concerns are real. NASA launched an investigation late spring to scan Yellowstone from space to measure how much the dome has risen or fallen as well as other scientific methods to determine what is happening. From my research if you live in Denver and should Yellowstone erupt, within hours Denver will be covered with up to 8ft of ash. There is ZERO escape. Further from the eruption, some 600 miles or so, you’re still in the death zone. But if you live near me, you have a chance of survival but likely starve due to a complete infrastructure and social breakdown. The threat is so real, that the United States has an evacuation plan and agreement with Australia to support US refugees in the tens of millions. This is factual and we have already financed this with Australia. I’m not losing sleep over this but the threat is a reality and it’s just a matter of when. What should scare people is that there’s government plans in place.

It's already worse on Mars. There's no magnetic field, so the atmosphere is getting burned off and the planet is routinely bathed in lethal radiation from solar flares. It's a nice place to visit with unmanned rovers, but you couldn't live there.

I doubt we will be so lucky as to be the last gen to survive or maybe not a cataclysmic event such as this. I'm more worried about a bacterial pandemic, like the Spanish flu.

With my excessive running I think I should worry most about sudden death.

I thought SARS was going to be the end of us. But yeah, a distinct possibility of a major outbreak of some sort.

My biggest concern is the non genetic diversity in crops. One bad disease outbreak and everything dies. Genetically diverse crops are different from each other so if something kills one it might not kill the other and we are going away from that. Its why the spanish flu/ebola or whatever doesn't kill all humans, because we are genetically diverse and some peoples genetics were better able to deal with it.

I think dwindling fresh water resources, coupled with high energy costs, will be the trigger for global calamity about mid century. |

Not to be rude, but both the Spanish flu and SARS were caused by viruses, not bacteria. Antibiotics have no effect on viruses and anti-virals have never been as readily available as antibiotics (which are still grossly overused and evolving resistance is a serious concern).
The main reason for increased life spans since the start of the 20th Century (IMO) is overall improvement in sanitation and the required infrastructure to provide proper sanitation. When that backslides, people don't do as well overall (see Typhus now in LA - google it if interested). No one has contacted me about my spot on the trip to Australia. I can just imagine who gets saved. |

FWIW, i agree with him on the freshwater resources being an issue as well... but that is because its melting and becoming ocean water Seriously though people are planting heavily water dependent crops in dry-ish areas and over irrigating, putting a lot of pressure on the water resources unless its a particularly wet year. California is a prime example especially combined with the water needs of a very populated area.

If this super volcano does eventually erupt, would it be safe to wear my Rolex that day?
I have a DSSD, would that be the best Rolex to wear for a cataclysmic event, or should I wear my Seiko diver that day? Thanks. |

The threat is real. Although I am more concerned with global pandemic and blood borne infections.
A good friend is a research biologist. He says all these other catastrophe threats are real, but is convinced it will be a pandemic that wipes us out. I pretty much stick my head in the sand and enjoy life as much as possible in my limited time here.

There was a guy on the street corner today screaming the world was going to end. Now I understand what he was talking about.

Will lume be more or less important after the eruption? I keep going back and forth. On the one hand, a lumed watch will be MORE important because we won’t be able to read the time in our new dark, hellish existence. But on the other hand, it will be a lot harder to naturally charge the lume without sunlight, so it wouldn’t really matter. But on the other hand again, all Americans are moving to sunny Australia (maybe Canada has a similar agreement with New Zealand?), so maybe lume will still be important?
It’s all very confusing. I’m going to stock up on Twinkies. |
