Keen's Steak house is a true keeper in this category ... one of the original steak houses in NYC Very good food and service without being rushed . Not fancy it has its historic atmosphere in spades
Mortons is on the other side if the spectrum .. high end ,posh , pricey But they serve great food. May still have Cigar area ? Peter Lugers in great neck is easier all around vs Brooklyn - same food different atmosphere particularly the patrons |

I’ve been to all the other NYC steakhouses mentioned in this thread. All are very good at what they do. The thing to keep in mind is that on any given night, one steakhouse can be better than another because of: 1) the biggest factor - the actual steak that someone in the kitchen happens to grab and put under the broiler. Each steak is slightly different. Sometimes you get one cut from the middle and sometimes you get one closer to either end. It can make a huge difference and it’s totally out of your control. 2) The attitude and attentiveness of your waitperson. Maybe they’re trying to take care of too many tables when you happen to be there. 3) Kitchens sometimes miss on your stated preference for doneness. Rare, med rare, med, etc can vary. Two people sitting at the same table, who order the same exact medium rare steak can have two very different experiences.
That said, here are some other very good steakhouses that haven’t been mentioned yet, but are worthy of your consideration: STK Midtown, BLT Prime and Smith & Wollensky (among others). I prefer to avoid the fanfare of the already-cut-up porterhouse that Luger’s made so famous. I’m a big boy and I’ll cut my own steak as I please. I always get a NY Strip (or “shell steak” as they sometimes call it), medium rare. The two most consistently good steakhouses in my experience have been Wolfgang’s on 33rd & Park Ave and Strip House (either location). All the others can also be very good. This is just my experience. Your mileage may vary. Enjoy! |

I have family that works there, and no i wont help you get a table lol. Show up, introduce yourself to the main seater/floor manager, tip him $50. Youll get a table in 15-20 minutes. Enjoy

Yes, if you give the maitre'd $50 or $100, you'll get a table no problem. Also I've had luck walking in just before the final seating of the night and getting a table.

I second this suggestion.
I was at Keens last week. It’s certainly old school. But the place is jus as iconic and the food is incredible. I had the mutton. It was worth writing home about.

So many great options in NYC. If you want to go to Luger's I'd shell out the $50 as mentioned above and call it a day.

Too, I've almost never had a reservation to the Brooklyn location and have never been turned away. I'm sure my success rate has been helped by never having more than a party of two, but don't let not having a RESV stop you from going. And I've never had to tip, but would if it came to that. |

I’ve managed to get served at Lugers being a walk in. Consider getting there early. If that isn’t an option put your name in and get cozy at the bar.

BTW, as others have said, there are great steakhouses in NYC.
I love Keens (ooooh that Mutton Chop!!), Quality Meats, and Wolfgangs, but there is something about Luger's that you have to experience at least once. The steak, the bacon app, the sometimes brusk waiters, the old german beer hall kind of set up inside are all part of the lure. It truly is an experience like no other. Skip the big chains like Morton's and Del Frisco. They are great but they are chains and nothing special. |

March last year the wife and I went to Benjamin on 41St with some local friends. Service was great, food was great too but the atmosphere on Peter Luger was much better IMO. Not sure the hour we spent drinking there had something to do with it lol.

Native NY’er here and my favorite steakhouse in the 5 boroughs is The Old Homestead in the meat packing district. Opened shortly after the Civil War ended and still going strong.
If you’re set on Lugers( which is top notch also) try to go “off peak” hours to more easily get a table. You can try and buy your way in on a busy night but you might get shutout and looking where else to go. If you get in, Don’t forget to order the spinach, it’s to die for. Good luck |

Try the Notify Me function on their online reservation site or the RESY app. You can set it up for multiple days and designate the time frame (e.g. 6:30-9:30pm). If one opens up you’ll get an email or a notification via the app. But you have to respond quickly before someone else gets it. I’ve had luck using it on some other popular restaurants.
As others have said Luger’s opens reservations 6 weeks out. https://peterluger.com/ https://apps.apple.com/us/app/resy/id866163372 Good luck! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Do you have a Gold Amex or Platinum? Chase Saphire? The concierge service may be able to get you a reservation.

(Although, since they don’t take credit cards not sure that AMEX or Chase would have any leverage.) In previous years I’ve also tried, well ahead of time, to see if my hotel (Ritz Central Park) concierge could get us in. “No way” was the response along with “we can get you in most other places, just not there”. |

I've been to the Old Homestead twice. Didn't love it the first time and the second time confirmed the first. Not terrible but probably never again. I think it's a step below Gallaghers, which I like but don't go there much anymore either. There are so many that are so much better. |
